Fourth of July has always been everyone’s favorite holidays. You have beer, brats, good friends and good times. 'Merica! But not everyone enjoys this holiday.
Unfortunately, there are many people who choose to avoid this holiday, stay inside and not be around all the super fun party times. A few of the people who opt out of this holiday are veterans and some people with disabilities because it can cause them extreme discomfort and uneasiness. For veterans especially, fireworks can trigger their PTSD and cause them to involuntarily act out in a negative way — sometimes violently.
I’m not saying I’m against fireworks — they’re all fun and cool when done correctly. However, people need to be aware of the repercussions when using them. Many people ignore the fact that veterans live nearby when setting off fireworks. Not only that, but many times fireworks are set off illegally.
Here are some examples according to NBC News: “Those concerns were borne out last year on Independence Day when a Georgia veteran with PTSD killed himself after he became agitated by fireworks," family members said. And last week a vet in Wisconsin fired rifle shots into the air after early fireworks “triggered him” and he thought he was back in Afghanistan, according to a police report.
This NBC article is from 2016, but the point still remains: fireworks can cause some serious problems for some people. The worst part is that many people simply don't care and stay ignorant about those around them.
While it's true that most veterans will not act out violently if they hear fireworks, some may because most post-war veterans, especially those who served in Afghanistan, suffer from PTSD. All I am trying to say is that if you're setting off fireworks in a neighborhood, please make sure everyone is OK with it happening. Also, make sure you're doing it legally... The fines are the worst and no one wants that to ruin their holiday!
All I'm trying to say here is to have fun, but make sure everyone else is having a good holiday too. I don't want those with PTSD to have a harder time than they have to during this holiday. Everyone should have the opportunity to have a great Fourth of July!
