I want to become a veterinarian. It has been a dream of mine since I was four years and I am sticking to it. Last fall, I was accepted by my dream school, Michigan State University. Originally, I planned to "major" in pre-veterinary medicine. This is more of an academic path versus a degree-granting major. So, I changed my major to animal science. I wanted a piece of paper that means I did something.
Every time that I tell someone I am majoring in animal science, they ask "So, what can you do with that?". I let out a long sigh and say: "I want to be a veterinarian". Then, guess what the typical "I-have-no-idea-about-the-animal-industry" response is: "Wow, that must be a super hard field to get in. So-and-so wanted to be a veterinarian and wasted her time and money because she is not using her degree."
Thank you for that vote of confidence!
What many people do not understand is the wide array of jobs that come within the animal science major. Yes, I want to be a veterinarian, but who knows what might happen in the next 4 years as I explore my major? Out of all the population in the United States, economically active agricultural-based jobs only cover 1% (Field & Taylor). That is crazy. That means the demand for certain jobs can be insane.
So, yes, being a veterinarian is a competitive career option. I might not be a vet like I dreamed about as a 4-year-old, but there is no way that I will be able to leave the world of agriculture behind. This area of study affects every single person in this country and on this planet, so, being in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is still a dream of mine.
