From what I have gathered, Lemonade is about being an African American woman, who has been mistreated in a relationship as well as by the public. That is a very watered down explanation of what is happening in this visual album. I bought this album and listened to it on repeat for days. I grew obsessed with the film and am convinced I can no longer view life the same way. I obviously cannot relate to being in this situation, but her album conveys an empowering message about African woman.
She showed me a world I didn't know existed. The stages of pain that this woman has to fight on her own, yet she is able to rebuild shows a type of power I have never seen. I loved how Beyonce included other women in each song; I felt that each woman was moving together as one, as if they were all experiencing the same thing. They were one unit and committed so effortlessly.
Also, after watching this film I noticed what the media focuses on. I thought I would see most reviews based on how Beyonce has revolutionized music through the use of her visual album. I was sad to find that people were focusing on whether Jay-Z had been cheating or the identity of Becky, a girl she mentions in her visual album that the media suspects might be the person whom Jay-Z cheated with.
Additionally, the media focused on the manner in which Beyonce may be distributing albums, they believe it is wrong because she does not give the media a date for which she is going to release her album, and this has had a major effect on the music industry because they now lack control. All these factors may be important in one way or another but I do not think Beyonce would have wanted that kind of attention for the album. I think Beyonce is trying to teach us all something.
Perhaps Beyonce is trying to teach us about African American women, about their strength and what they go through in their lives. She is trying to show us that there is the ability to move forward regardless of infidelity in one's life. Life moves on. People do have the ability to come back together with love. She is showing us what it is to truly means to be a woman. There are no restrictions from what she feels or thinks. There is only honesty. We must respect and honor these woman. There is a long line of women that we must recognize that we don't in our lives. Thank you Beyonce, for giving such an incredible visual album.
