Cars are one of the most rewarding things to buy and own. They give you a sense of ownership and responsibility. But it is not always sunshine and rainbows when it comes to maintenance.
When owing a car, you pretty much need to be prepared to fix issues that arise at any time. Sometimes you can hold off on bringing it to the mechanic or if it simple enough, fix it yourself to save money. But it is not always that easy.
According to Auto Express the most common issues when owning a vehicle are electrical problems of some sort, gearbox issues, brakes wearing down, and the alternator failing.
From having personal experiences with each one of those, what I struggled with the most was affording to fix the problems. Being in college and having a lot going on in life, when stuff goes wrong, it is never fun to have to deal with.
Another thing that I have struggled with and something that my friends have dealt with is the search for a new vehicle at an affordable cost. Many times the stress of your current car sends you out looking for a new vehicle. But it is hard to find low mileage and lower cost cars.
In college, you might not always need a vehicle, depending on the type of person you are, if people you know have cars or there is good public transportation available.
Overall, yes, the fact of owning a car is very stressful and costly. But once you own a vehicle and can afford the maintenance, it is well worth it.
