So my friends and I went to go see Captain Marvel the day it came out, and quite frankly I loved it. I cannot say, however, that my friends and I shared the same opinion. Some of them agreed, but others thought it was a bust. I'm not here to say they're wrong and I am not here to say I am right. I am here to explain why I thought it was great, what I liked about it, and what I didn't like about it. Oh, there might be spoilers so don't read this if you are worried about it.
Okay, why I thought it was great.
First of all, the main character was a female and she absolutely killed it. This is the first Marvel Universe movie with a female as the lead role and it honestly made it 10 times better. Her acting was 10/10, her chemistry with Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury) was phenomenal, and she controlled the show. If I could see it again it would be because of her.
Another reason I thought the movie was fantastic is because of how it is in the form of a prequel. This goes before any of the previous Marvel movies timeline-wise. This movie takes place around the 90s, and none of the other Marvel heroes are known yet. Towards the end of the movie, we realize that Captain Marvel's character caused Nick Fury to think of the Avenger's Initiative, which made him determined to find other "heroes" like her. In this movie, they also find the Tesseract, which holds the blue infinity stone (space). The Tesseract, for those who don't know, is a powerful energy that Thanos, the villain of the Marvel heroes who SOME believe he has good intentions, will later want for his infinity gauntlet. This whole movie begins what we know as The Avengers. Personally, I think it made the whole plot more interesting, but some may disagree.
A few other small reasons why I enjoyed this movie is because of the comedy in it.
Marvel movies are great with the small and the big moments. By small, I mean the humorous things like Drax from Guardians in the Galaxy or stupid punchlines from Iron Man. This movie contained those moments too. Samuel Jackson, in my opinion, was the center of these small moments. My personal favorite, him with the alien cat. Throughout the movie, the SHIELD agent had cute moments with an orange cat, that turned out to have weird-ass tentacles coming from its mouth whenever it felt in danger. The "cat's" name? Goose. Goose, you killed it. Chemistry with Samuel Jackson = 10/10. Samuel Jackson is known for his comedic moments throughout the Marvel series, and he brought it again to this killer cinematic piece. Really hope he isn't done being a part of these movies, but who knows.
Another thing I thought was really good, is how they portrayed Captain Marvel's people, the Kree, to be the good guys and the Skrulls to be the bad guys when in reality it was the other way around. I can tell you right now I did not expect that to happen. Maybe that isn't a big shocker to others, but I go into the movies not knowing much about the plot because it makes the experience better for me.
Now some reasons why I didn't like it.
Honestly, I don't have much. One thing that really pissed me off is that Captain Marvel's friend's daughter helped Carol (Captain Marvel) choose her new suit colors so that she wasn't resembling Kree anymore. Yeah, it is a cute moment, but this little girl just played with Carol's suit tech like she knew EVERYTHING about it. She just happened to know where to press and swirl her fingers around to get her official suit color. I don't know why, but it just really made me mad. I can't say I have any other negative things to say about the movie.
Overall, I highly recommend seeing this movie. My friends came to a conclusion of rating it 7.5/10 but in my opinion, it is a solid 8/10. Maybe even higher. Get ready for Endgame to come out April 26th I believe. I'll be rewatching some Marvel movies in the meantime if anyone wants to join. Enjoy your week!
