Captain America: Civil War Questions

To start, this article contains SPOILERS for several movies that are considered to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On May 6, 2016, "Captain America: Civil War" will hit theaters as the next Marvel film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And this time, the stakes have been raised, as former allies will go head-to-head. This is not going to be your standard superhero movie of good versus evil. This film will see two fan favorites leading their own teams to duke it out. Captain America will take on Iron Man, Black Widow will battle Hawkeye, the Winter Soldier will face off with Black Panther, and so much more.

And why are these heroes fighting one another, you may ask? The core of the issue comes in the form of superhero registration following some national disasters resulting from superhero related battles, such as the battle with Ultron (If you haven’t seen "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" by now, I highly recommend it). Cap will be anti-registration, while Tony/Iron Man will be for it. Other heroes will decide which side they believe in and side with one of their allies. Then throw in some real bad guys, like Crossbones, Baron Zemo, maybe Red Hulk, and maybe even Red Skull (unlikely but possible – more on that later).

So with all of that put together, this film is sure to have a lot to digest. Given that we have only seen one trailer so far, there are still so many questions left leading up to the film. So without further ado, here are some of the more prominent questions about "Captain America: Civil War," along with some of my own personal predictions.

Why is Hawkeye back?

At the end of "The Avengers: Age of Ultron", Hawkeye seemed to retire to his secret farm with his family. With a wife and two kids, and another on the way, Clint Barton (Hawkeye) appeared content to leave the superhero life behind him so he could focus on his family.

However, Hawkeye is in full battle mode as he stands side by side with Captain America and his team during the trailer. So what made Clint change his mind and return to a life of crime fighting? Is it the guilt of Quicksilver’s death, considering he gave his life to save Hawkeye's? Is he recruited back by Quicksilver’s sister, Scarlet Witch, who is also on team Cap? Or Maybe Cap himself calls upon Hawkeye because he needs his special skills?

I have one more idea. I believe Hawkeye’s secret will somehow get out. By that, I mean the fact that he has a family and a secret farm will get into the wrong hands. Clint will be out of the house when the bad guy arrives at his cabin, and what follows will be one of the saddest, most disturbing, parts of the film. The villain (whose identity I am purposely not revealing at the moment), will end up killing Hawkeye’s entire family.

This hideous act will lead to Hawkeye getting back in the game, as he has nothing left to lose. He will fight for the honor of Quicksilver and his family. It will also lead him to team Cap, as he will be on the side that sees superhero registration only leading to more heinous actions like the one that occurred at his own farm.

Who captured Bucky?

In the post credit scene in "Antman," (who is not seen in the first trailer, but has been confirmed for team Cap) Bucky has his metal arm trapped in some sort of vice. Parts of this same scene can be seen at the beginning of the trailer, as Cap and Falcon question him. So how did Bucky end up in this predicament and who trapped him? Was it Cap? Was it Crossbones or Zemo? General Ross?

It appears Bucky will be on the run early in the film as he is likely to be blamed for a major incident he truly did not have a hand in.

It is possible a villain such as Zemo or Crossbones trap Bucky, but I am not sure what their motive would be. It seems unlikely Tony is responsible, since during the clip in "Antman," Cap and Falcon say they can’t call Tony since he wouldn’t believe them. I think the most likely answer is Captain America himself.

Cap will have the motive to find Bucky to find out the truth. He will also be looking to find out if the real Bucky is still in there somewhere. Also, no one knows Bucky like Cap does, so it would make sense that he is the one that knows how to draw Bucky to a certain location.

What role will Black Panther play? What about Spider-Man?

Several new characters will be introduced during Civil War and two of those new characters are Black Panther and Spider-Man. We got a glimpse of Black Panther during the first trailer and he looked down right awesome. From what we have seen in the trailer, Black Panther is on the run from Cap and fighting Bucky.

So does that mean he is on team Iron Man? It does seem likely from what is seen in the trailer, though things are not likely that simple. Is it possible Black Panther is on his own mission of sorts, which just so happen to put him on the side of registration? Or maybe he is has something against someone on team Cap.

In the comics, a big part of Black Panther’s story involves the death of his father. So is it possible that Bucky killed Black Panther’s father, leading him to seek revenge?

On the Spider-Man side of things, there was no sign of Peter Parker anywhere in the trailer. So his role is much more of a mystery. How will he be brought into this whole debate? Which team will he side with? How much of the movie will he actually be in and how will it help set up his solo film?

It sounds like he will be part of team Iron Man. My best guess says he meets Tony on some sort of school field trip to Avengers Tower, since they want to emphasize his age. A lot of this backstory will likely be saved for his solo film, and only the essentials will be used to introduce him. I also expect his introduction to come in the third act, ala Vision in Age of Ultron.

Will Thanos appear?

Simply put, will Thanos have a scene in "Civil War?" Since this is the last film that major characters such as Cap, Iron Man, Bucky, Falcon and many other Avengers will have major roles before Infinity Wars, will Thanos be shown to show how close his arrival is? Or is there simply so much going on in the film that adding him in will be too much, even if it is only for a scene?

If Thanos does make an appearance, it is virtually a guarantee it will only be for a single scene. That makes him likely for another post-credits scene appearance, if anything. Since "Thor: Ragnarok" will likely be the catalyst for "Infinity Wars," I do not think his appearance is needed in "Civil War." I think "Ragnarok" will do plenty to explain what Thanos wants, and he won’t be needed here.

So while I expect we will know where a lot of the characters will be, mentally and physically, for Infinity Wars by the end of this film, the appearance of Thanos will not be required. Using the post credit scene to hype up another film, such as "Doctor Strange" would be better in my opinion.

Who is the true villain of the film?

Many expected Iron Man to be the “villain” of the film when it as first announced. Then we learned Zemo and Crossbones would be appearing in the film, along with General Ross. Then there is Martin Freeman’s character, which is clouded in mystery. It is assumed he will be a government agent of sorts, but that is all we really know. So who is the real villain here?

The first trailer painted Iron Man as someone you felt sympathy towards, and he is a fan favorite. Turning him heel (making him a bad guy in wrestling terms) does not seem like the right move, given the plethora of options. As for Martin Freeman, I think this film will serve the purpose of laying groundwork for whatever future films he appears in. I get the feel he will be a bad guy, but those effects won’t be felt here.

I think in the beginning, General Ross will be seen as the bad guy, pushing for registration with an air of question about him. I think they will hint at ulterior motives with scenes Ross appears in. However I believe he is only a pawn in a larger chess match, and those ulterior motives will be that of someone else.

I believe the head puppet master here will be Zemo, who will also use Crossbones to do his bidding like he does Ross. However, Crossbones will be Zemo’s muscle, doing most of his dirty work. Zemo, like Freeman, will be explored further down the road, with "Civil War" setting the stage for him. I believe these three (Zemo, Crossbones and Ross/Red Hulk) will be revealed to be the start of the Masters of Evil.

Here is where I think a twist comes in. I do not believe Zemo is Zemo, but actually Red Skull. We last saw Red Skull disappear thanks to the Tesseract in the first "Captain America" film, with many assuming he died. But Red Skull is too important of a character to be gone for good, however. And since it is said this version of Zemo is not like the one in the comics, I think a surprise reveal would be a pretty awesome twist.

Who dies?

With a film this big, we know someone has to die. More likely, multiple people of importance will die. So who is going to bite the bullet?

Up first, since I mentioned it earlier, is Hawkeye's family. And the person responsible will be none other than Crossbones. Crossbones will be sent by Zemo to kill Hawkeye and his family, with the intent of trying to pin the blame on someone from team Iron Man with the intent of furthering the feud between Tony and Cap.

Peggy Carter is another potential victim of Crossbones. More than likely she will die of old age, but having Crossbones do the deed in an effort to pin it on someone like Bucky (to now try and split Cap and his best friend), would make for a great addition.

Other heroes who do not have their own films will also need to be watched. Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, and War Machine are all potential candidates. War Machine specifically looked to be in very rough shape in the trailer. Scarlet Witch doesn’t seem to be at much risk given the death of her brother in "Age of Ultron", while Vision is likely safe since his “death” will probably be saved for when Thanos has to rip the mind stone from his forehead. Bucky is foreshadowed as the next Captain America, so killing him would be a major surprise.

Heroes like Antman, Black Panther, and Spider-Man are all likely safe, given their future films. But what about the bad guys? Crossbones could easily be done after this film finishes, given he is likely to be doing a lot of the dirty work. Zemo is too new and likely to be operating in the shadows, meaning he should be safe. Ross has yet to become the Red Hulk, and likely won’t perish until he sees battle, which I do not expect here.

As for Cap and Tony, more on them in the next question.

How does the film end, and how is the conflict resolved?

The way I look at this, this film has to end one of two ways. One, a greater evil emerges and our heroes realize they need to set their differences aside to defeat it. Or two, a major death occurs. And only two characters can fulfill this: Cap or Tony.

My vote goes to option two. I have two possible scenarios that end in the same result.

First, Cap and Bucky are squaring off against Tony. They beat down Tony to the point that he is no longer able to defend himself. At this point Cap realizes he has gone too far. He can’t throw another punch against his former ally. However, Bucky does not feel the same way. Bucky lines up his gun (we know he likes guns thanks to the trailer) to finish off Tony. Bucky fires the shot, but Cap realizes his friend does not deserve to lose his life over this debate. Cap takes the bullet for Tony, as the audience gasps in surprise. Cap’s body lays there motionless and lifeless. This leaves Bucky going into future films feeling the guilt of murdering his best friend, which will lead him to take on the Captain America mantle. Tony decides he wants to oversee superhero activity but his days of fighting are over (Although we know he isn’t done because he’s done this at least twice before), as he too feels guilty for Cap’s death.

Option two sees Cap and Iron Man squaring off one-on-one. Both men fight to the point that they cannot stand. At this point they both realize, there is no point in fighting a friend in a war that cannot be won. There is not going to be a winner. When you fight a friend, no one wins. This leads to an agreement between the men that superheroes can be supervised in a sense, but only by a trustworthy group that includes them. Tony will take the mantle of Director, and both men end on good terms. One evening after leaving a meeting at Avengers Tower with the new Superhero council (the MCU version of the Illuminati anyone?), Cap is met by a shooter. Cap is gunned down and killed by either Crossbones (if he is still alive), or Agent 13, Shannon Carter (if they want to stay true to the comics).

One way or another, I hope this film ends with this classic shot.

So what do you think? What questions do you have about Civil War? What answers do you have for the questions asked here? Let’s hear your predictions for Cap and Iron Man’s battle!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

181724

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
