Climate Change Is Not A Partisan Issue

Can we move beyond politics and discuss it with an open mind?

Why does the discussion about climate change have to be turned into a partisan issue? It seems these days we can hardly agree about anything whenever politics gets involved. It's as if partisanship takes precedence over logic or dialogue.

Most of us, regardless of our political leaning or partisan views, agree with what scientists are telling us about various issues. But when it comes to discussions about global warming or climate change, we don't feel the same way. It has become a controversial issue where some of us don't trust scientists anymore.

I don't get why it is very difficult to fathom that humans have had an impact on the Earth's warming. Or is it that those who agree with the theory behind global warming are too diabolical in their views that others are turned off by the whole discussion? In some cases the discussion about global warming seems to devolve into the idea that life on Earth is headed toward a downward spiral, and that can be discouraging. But there is some merit to it. When we see the effects of Earth's warming on sea levels and other things it's clear that something needs to be done, if it's possible to help slow or halt the negative effects of our warming Earth. Before the last 100 years, there has never been a time in Earth's history where there have been factories burning fossil fuel, cars with all the pollution that comes along, or the scale of industrialization that we have reached. It only makes sense that all this would have an impact on the Earth and the climate. So, why is human involvement in the Earth's warming a point of contention?

If you hear the scientific explanation of how CO2 in the atmosphere causes the Earth to heat up, it's pretty simple. But still, people refuse to believe in the science behind it. For one, there are large multinational corporations that stand to lose if CO2 emissions are limited. But that is a shortsighted outlook if limiting CO2 will help curb the negative effects of global warming. Many companies have already switched to more sustainable options and are working on developing sustainable solutions that are supposed to reduce greenhouse gases in the environment. There are a lot of options for investing in cleaner, more sustainable solutions. The solar and alternative energy industry is growing and becoming the future, but some companies have yet to catch up. Even if reducing greenhouse gases will not stop global warming's effects it would at least be safer for people -- less toxic chemicals that we have to be exposed to.

If there is a possibility of reducing the negative effects of global warming we need to have a constructive non-partisan dialogue about it and put our future ahead of petty arguments. I think both sides need to discuss what they agree and disagree on in order to come to a possible solution. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please leave a comment below.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
