This year has been filled with so much celebrity shade that it is hard to keep up. Personally I can't find enough time to sort through all the bullshit that is BuzzFeed and Refinery29 articles covering who threw what shade and why. And what really grinds my gears is the fact that these celebrity feuds are what get us jazzed during the day. We feel so important and a part of their extravagant, and out-of-our reach lives for just a small amount of time because we read their tweets and we feel like we really understand what they're going through — which is totally ridiculous. In a world where so many injustices and horrible things happen, we should be more concerned with what actually matters instead of being obsessed with what really went down between personified sphincter Kanye West and self proclaimed white feminist Taylor Swift.
Celebrities hold so much power in their undeserving hands it's amazing that more of them don't do something more with it. It's great that Kim Kardashian West and Emily Ratajkowski can post topless pictures of themselves and claim they are being progressive in the feminism movement but what are they actually doing for us women? Emma Watson, as you all know, has been appointed the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helped launch HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate for gender equality.
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio gave the Oscar speech heard around the world when he accepted his Oscar for Best Actor in 2016. He took his time on the stage to bring to light the very real issue of climate change. Something that is so important to our survival on this ever changing planet. Instead of endless droning he took the power that he had to get the conversation going. Another actor that has passion for our planet is Mark Ruffalo. When he's not turning green for the silver screen, he is campaigning against fracking and taking a stance against the water situation in Flint Michigan and more recently, he took the pledge for peace in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, one movement most celebrities don't associate their names with. Actor Jesse Williams took the stage this year at the BET awards when he accepted the Humanitarian of the Year Award. He continues to advocate for social change and he does not back down. He uses his voice to raise awareness and start the conversation about a system that was built to divide. Actress Laverne Cox consistently advocates for LGBTQIA rights. She continues to tell her story openly and with courage in hopes to help those in the community feel safer and more supported when they come out.
The point is that with so many famous and influential people out there, you would think that the world would be a little bit better of a place. But right now it's not. It's not a place of safety or love. Its a place where the headlines care more about what Khloé said to Chloe, and what Bette Midler tweeted at Kim, instead of the attacks in Paris and the bombing during Ramadan. So this is my call to celebrities, to anyone of Influence — use your voice, use your power to do something good. Put aside your pettiness and help start a dialog to this issues at hand, and maybe earn more respect for building the world and each other up, instead of tearing one another apart.
