During the month of June, I was at a sleep away camp called Camp Barney Medintz. It was the time of my life as I made forever friends and did loads of activities. One of the activities that I did was called solo. It is basically spending 24 hours in the woods alone without talking to anyone. Right off the bat, it may seem scary, but it wasn't at all. My counselors provided every camper with trash bags to make tarps, food, twine and a couple other basic necessities for the woods.
It's not like each of us was stranded alone, miles from another person. We couldn't see anyone, but there was a camper on either side of me in a place I couldn't see. Counselors also came around every few hours to check on us.
The one big point of solo is to give us time to think. I thought about everything there is to think about. Having 24 hours of free time can easily feel too long. I just sat on the ground, tried to ignore the bugs eating at my skin and just thought. I had so many thoughts running through my head at once that I barely remember what I thought about. One thing I did think about was what it would be like to be a bug.
Yes, I know that sounds weird, but it was interesting to imagine. All of us campers who went on solo invaded the bugs' land, stepping on them without a care in the world. To them, we are scary giants, but to us, they are just little critters that bite us for who knows what reason.
It would be like if our world was invaded by giants. We would seem like bugs to them. How would we feel if our territory was invaded without taking into consideration that this is our home? That is basically what a bug feels like, if they have any feelings at all. When we went on solo, each of us campers took up an amount of space that could have been a bug's home, and we just came in and invaded it. To be honest, I was ready to smash any bug that came in my way because I always get eaten by bugs when I am outside. Solo wasn't any different.
So, as I was sitting in the woods thinking, I vividly imagined my life as a bug, and what it would have been like as a bug at my campsite, and what it was like if a human invaded that space...
I look up from eating my green leaf that I found on the ground this morning while scavenging for food. In the distance, I hear loud bangs, and I instantly go into self-defense mode, moving around in circles to check my surrounding area. I would know that noise anywhere. It's the sound of human footsteps.
It is one of the most terrifying sounds I've ever heard, and it happens so often I know exactly what it sounds like. I made a protocol for myself whenever this happens. Whenever there is a human near, I need to take extreme precautions to protect my home and myself.
The first thing I do is begin scurrying to my home. It is pretty far away from me, probably a good two minute run at full speed, but for a human it would take less than thirty seconds. Being an ant isn't that helpful at times. I start my fast trek to my house, which is composed of a couple of leaves and sticks. I have to get there in time. Hopefully when the human arrives, it won't step on my home or me. My home is right next to a tree trunk, secluded from the rest of the woods. I did my best to hide it, but now I need my home to hide me.
I scurry past a bunch of my friends as they are in a hurry as well to protect themselves. I run over leaves, and I almost jam myself into a stick because I was running so fast. I would have been a dead ant if I ran into it, but thankfully I went under it just in time.
I am almost to my home when I see the human for the first time. I try to move myself even faster, my tiny heart beating too fast. I am so scared I don't know what to do with myself. The human comes even closer, and soon enough, I see a dark shadow come over my head.
I run, I run for my life, and right as the foot lands, I am out. I finally reach my home, and I crawl under the leaves and sticks and hide myself to the best of my ability. I study the human, and I soon realize that it will not be leaving.
This is going to be a long and scary night.
