I have come a long way in 5 years

A Bucket List From My 14 Year Old Self
Sara Bryan

I am a full supporter of living life to the fullest in every way- physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. I want every day to be a day worth remembering and reliving. Due to this, when I was 14, I wrote a bucket list of the things I want to experience before I die. Whether that is in 80 years or 80 minutes, I hope to have lived a fulfilled life. As an almost 19-year-old (July 28, happy birthday to me), I thought it would be fun to look back on that list I wrote five years ago and see my progress.

1. Ballroom dance with someone special to "Tale as Old as Time" — Good news! My friends threw me a surprise 17th birthday party where I got the chance to slow dance with my boyfriend at the time whom I loved very much

2. Find a best friend that I'll know for all my life — I'm still currently searching but I have made some amazing friends in college who I am sure I will be close with for a long time.

3. Make a difference — I want to impact as many people as I can while I'm here. While I feel I have impacted someone's life, I won't stop until after I am gone.

4. Stop feeling tiny in my family — I want to be someone my family will be proud of. I am still working on that.

5. Go to Australia/prove I've conquered my fear of the dangers in the ocean — Funny thing is that I wanted to be a marine biologist for a long time. I haven't been to Australia yet but I have accomplished the second part!

6. Rock climb a mountain

7. Become an incredible, faithful Christian — I struggle with this every day, but I am trying

8. Learn to play guitar — I'm currently learning

9. Dance on stage again — When I wrote this, I had just stopped performing as a dancer. Since then I have danced on stage 3 times and every time made it feel like I never stopped.

10. Find a career — I am a social work major hoping to work with abuse and sexual assault cases

11. Shrink my thighs — Yes I was and still am a very self-conscious girl. Since I wrote this, I have lost weight, not in the healthiest way, but I have learned to be comfortable in my body

12. Stop being so paranoid — I believe another term for this to control my anxiety, which is a work in progress

13. Cheer again — I was a competitive cheerleader for 6 years

14. Find my true love — Hey boi wya

15. A fairytale ending — I still hope that one day I will live happily ever after, no matter how naive that is

16. Become a role model — I want to inspire people

17. Make my parents proud — I hope I am

18. Introduce Jesus to many people — I have been on two international mission trips where I was able to share my faith with many people

19. Read the whole "Harry Potter" series — This still has not happened but I've read three of them

20. Become Guard captain — I was Lieutenant 2013-14 and Captain 2014-15

21. Get into Pepperdine University — I did it!

22. Get my heart broken — the only way to discover who you can be is to fix yourself when you're broken. I have had my heart broken and destroyed and I have never been happier with who I've become

25. Study abroad — I will be going the Montevideo, Uruguay this fall

26. Become bilingual — This will be accomplished by December 2016

27. Prove them wrong — When someone says I can't do something, I go out of my way to show them that I can

28. Live, laugh, love

29. Publish my work — I love writing poetry and I am hoping one day others will enjoy it, too. For now, it is just for me. However, writing for the Odyssey is such a huge honor!

In five years I am very proud of what I have accomplished. While some items are works in progress, I have still come a long way since I was 14. In five years from now, I want to look back at this and realize that I have done so much more that just what is on this list. I want to have lived and keep living for as long as I can.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
