If you watched the Billboard Music Awards this year, then you probably saw the K-pop group BTS win Top Social Artist. There are two things that need to be discussed with this win.
1. The category was Top Social Artist. In that group was also Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes. I remember watching and saying to myself, "I love BTS, but they probably won't win, sadly." But, when they did I legit screamed for joy and I probably shed a few tears. They beat today's top artists and a lot of Americans don't know them. It shows that you don't have to be from the US (or Canada like Mendes or Beiber) to win this award.
Ever since they won this award, they have been HOT here in the states. They are reportedly going to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and the American Music Awards later this year.
Let me tell you why this is so important; no K-pop artist has won an American award or been on an American talk show. Yes, we have music groups from the UK, Australia and many in the Latino community, but where was the Asian music? It was very rare here, but slowly that is changing. BTS is killing it on the Billboard Music charts. As of Nov. 12, the appeared on 12 Billboard charts--including No. 1 on the Social 50.
2. This seems to be the year that Americans wake up and notice some amazing international artists. For example, this summer was HUGE for Luis Fonzi and Daddy Yankee with "Despacito" (although I'm salty because of Beiber being on it, but that's another article for another day). Ever since BTS won their award, it seems that trend will slowly expand here. Maybe in 2018, GOT7 will be on an American talk show or maybe SHINEE will win an award at the Billboard Music Awards. This is only the beginning for K-pop in the states. If that happens, then maybe that will give other international artists a chance to make it over here. That's the ultimate dream for many international artists.
Music is constantly evolving; we are discovering new genres and new global artists and it makes me so happy. I can't wait to see what BTS will do at the American Music Awards and all the US talk shows. It just makes my heart happy that they are making bringing a new type of music here that many Americans are unaware of. If you're as excited as me, then you will be glued to their performance this Sunday. I'll also be waiting for the day when GOT7 appears on US television.
VICTORY FOR K-POP!
