"Brunching" has now become a Sunday verb used by many. For some, brunch is a delicious meal followed by church and surrounded by family. For others, brunch is the fuel they need after a much-too-fun Saturday night out with friends. Brunch isn't just a meal in between breakfast and lunch... It's a trend.
The latest project at my summer internship has been updating the Dining Guide of the July Issue for Charleston Magazine. This entails calling restaurants around the Charleston area and asking for dining information, such as menu items, hours of operation, etc. Yet, what I continued to notice was the increase in amount of "SBR" options available... Or in other words, Sunday Brunch.
With this dramatic increase, I deemed it necessary to investigate this Sunday Brunch rave, and make a top-five list. Check out these delicious restaurants and menus in the Charleston area. Not planning a trip to the Lowcountry? No problem! Make a top-five "brunching" list for your own city and explore!
1. High Cotton
199 East Bay St. Charleston, SC
Crab cakes Benedict with a grilled English muffin, spinach, lump crab cakes, poached eggs, creole hollandaise, and potatoes? Am I in heaven? This past Sunday I tried this famous Charleston brunching spot and absolutely fell in love. I would highly recommend the brioche french toast with almond streusel, Chantilly cream, berries, maple syrup, and bacon... Yep, my mouth is watering all over again.
2. Poogan's Porch
No. 72 Queen St. Charleston, SC
This little yellow house restaurant lives up to its Southern looks with a delicious Southern-style brunch. I would highly recommend the pimento BLT with pimento cheese, arugula, bacon, and two fried eggs. Looking for a real Southern classic? Try the chicken and waffles with Springer Mt. Farms all-natural chicken breast, sweet potato waffle, Texas Pete sorghum butter, and maple syrup.
3. Hominy Grill
207 Rutledge Ave. Charleston, SC
Oh. My. Biscuit. This Lowcountry brunch favorite is known for whipping up a delicious, buttery biscuit. Every Hominy Grill-goer loves the Charleston Nasty Biscuit with fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, and sausage gravy. Looking to shake things up a bit? Go for the Fried Green Tomato BLT with ancho chile lime mayonnaise on a kaiser roll. Honestly, you can't go wrong!
4. The Lot
1977 Maybank Hwy. Charleston, SC
At this well-known eatery, the menu is constantly changing, giving brunching customers fresh food and seasonal ingredients. If available, I would highly recommend the Benedict, which includes a blueberry biscuit, Italian sausage, poached eggs, pole bean, and of course, the signature hollandaise sauce. Looking for something a little different? Try the perfectly crafted grits bowl which includes a crispy chicken leg, geechie boy grits, chanterelle mushrooms, charred leeks, heirloom tomato, and a sunny-up egg... Yum!
5. Husk
76 Queen St. Charleston, SC
This is a restaurant on my "Must Try" list. And what caught my eye especially? Their Sunday brunch menu. Options such as the wood fired french toast with white peaches, whipped cream, and Kentucky sorghum paired with their buttermilk drop biscuits with summer berries and whipped honey butter... Yep, I think I've dreamed of this meal a few times.
