Have you ever noticed that when we refer to ourselves as broken, we normally see ourselves as ugly, unwanted, and unworthy of praise? We think that everything that is broken in life is not worth our time, or anybody else's, so we just throw it to the side. Well people, I am here to tell you, we have been looking at it ALL wrong.
While walking on the beach this past week I found myself looking for shells that I thought were beautiful, and you know what thought crossed my mind? These shells that I am holding in my hand are all in some form broken. They were thrown aside when the inhabitants got too big or the infrastructure somehow weakened, yet we find beauty in it. We believe that something that wasn't good enough for another creature is good enough for us to take home and show off.
If we can think like this with something as simple as a shell, why can't we think like that about ourselves? Why do we criticize EVERYTHING that we possibly can about us, yet find the beauty in something so small that is in literally pieces?
We spend our lives looking at magazines and the perfect retouched pictures on Instagram and think that if we don't look like that and aren't as happy as all of those people look, we are broken and unworthy of everything that this world has to offer, and let me tell you that is far from the truth.
The next time that you are struggling with thoughts of being broken, think of yourself as a shell. Find the beauty about you and your situation. If you can think something that has washed up on the shore is worthy of displaying and showing off to everybody, so are you.
