Most people go broke at some point in their college career. Doesn't matter how, doesn't matter when, but it happens. Here are 10 things you'll only understand if you've been broke before.
*Everything following this statement has actually happened to me, for real.*
1. Card declines at McDonald's
You handed the cashier the card so confidently. Nothing could go wrong, you definitely have that $9.52 to buy you and your friends Mickey D's... "Um your card was declined." Shoot.
2. Paying for meals with quarters
"Yeah sorry, I just need to get rid of these, thanks!" you say shakily, hoping the cashier doesn't see through your broke bluff.
3. Paying for gas with quarters
Car is on "E," you have places to go, no time to wait for the next paycheck.
4. Completely running out of gas
Shamelessly steering your car off to the side of the road, turning on your hazards, and calling the friend who has the least amount of daily responsibilities to help you in your time of need.
5. Panicking when your backup quarters run out
What happens if your card declines again? How will you scavenge enough dimes and nickels to pay for your Sonic mozzarella sticks?
6. Always paying somebody back
Whether that be your friends, your siblings, your parents, the bank... There's always someone to give some money back to.
7. Having literal sleep for dinner
You open the cabinets, realize there is nothing, open your wallet, also nothing. Best head to bed before the eminent self-hatred rooted in being broke sets in.
8. Borrowing computers
There is simply no money to fix your broken laptop. If no friends will allow you to borrow theirs, head to the nearest public library for a computer that probably doesn't have the software for the assignment you have to finish!
9. Constantly having a cracked phone screen
Do you know how expensive it is to fix that? I mean, near $150 for purely cosmetic reasons for your phone. It still works...ish.
10. Wishing you would get your finances together before the next broke sesh
If the continuous cycle of having money, blowing it, and being broke again isn't enough to get you out of your bad habits, what is?
It's okay. We all go through it. At least we're not alone, right?
