Winter break means almost a month off of school and spending our days at home. When you don't know what to do or can't take another moment of your sibling, binge-watch these amazing British TV shows on Netflix.
1. "The Great British Baking Show"
The holiday season brings out a great baker in many of us. Watch Mary Berry compliment the contestants on their "evenly defined layers" and Paul Hollywood ruin dreams as he refuses to eat their under-baked dough. A word of advice: only watch when you have snacks. Otherwise, you will be tortured by the cakes, Swiss rolls, and "biscuits."
2. "Sherlock"
You should definitely binge watch this with family or friends over the break because it has something for everyone. "Sherlock" has an incredible combination of mystery, dark humor and a hint of romance. Follow the mind games and unraveling of cases with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, both amazing actors in and out of this show.
3. "Top Gear"
Even if you know nothing about cars, you should educate yourself and watch this British car show. It's much more entertainment than just informing you about the new Kia or Toyota. The adventures and often grand mishaps of the hosts - Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May - will have you rolling your eyes and laughing out loud. Make sure you watch the earlier seasons available on Netflix because the later ones have the new hosts. Granted, the later seasons have Matt LeBlanc, but he and his co-hosts do not have nearly the same chemistry as the originals.
4. "Call The Midwife"
Enter 1950s London through the eyes of midwives in a time of incredible change in history and medicine. Follow the joy and heartbreak as they deal with triumphs and tough losses with brave mothers. You will be without a doubt wanting more.
5. "Death In Paradise"
It's another murder mystery show, but with a twist. A quirky English detective finds himself in St. Marie investigating murders with the locals. Definitely out of his element, the detective inspector has to prove himself through his brilliant eye and mind for solving crimes. There is enough comedic relief to make it a little less serious. It's easy to get lost in a season... or three.
6. "The Crown"
Just watch it. You'll fall so in love with Elizabeth and Phillip, especially if you're a Matt Smith fan having withdrawals after he left "Doctor Who." The history and manipulation are fascinating, and Queen Elizabeth II deals with every situation with such grace considering the grief and pressure she endures. Even though it is produced by Netflix, an American company, the majority of actors and directors are British. You'll feel classier just watching it.
7. "An Idiot Abroad"
The show is exactly what it sounds like. Karl Pilkington is in his happy place when he is in England living his normal life. Knowing this, his friends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (the minds behind the British version of "The Office") send him across the globe on adventures that other people would find fascinating. Go across the world with him to India, China, Africa, Mexico, Egypt and so many other places. Watch him gain more "authentic" experiences as his friends often have surprises in store for him when it comes to living like the locals.
After binge-watching these, you'll probably be thinking in a British accent and calling up your "mates" to see when you'll be hitting up the "bloody pub" on Friday for a "pint."
