Not to brag or anything, but what I predicted has come to pass. Despite the sexual assault allegations against him, and a testimony hearing that did not really clear up anything, renowned alleged rapist and judge, Brett Kavanaugh, has reached the next stage of the nomination process, after being approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is coincidently majority Republican. God, I hate being right. As ridiculous as this whole thing is, however, it may have given Democrats a boost heading into the midterm elections. Why? Well, you can thank Senate Republicans for that one.
It is not a secret that Senate Republicans are behind on the times.
You know that song "The Times They Are A-Changin'"? Yeah, they've never heard that song. Many of them still want to live in a world where Dad goes to work, Mom stays home and takes care of the housework and the kids, your gay neighbors were just "living together", and the most ethnic guy you'll ever see is Fonzie. This has been an implicit understanding for years, but with the emergence of Dr. Ford's accusation and the testimony that followed, the casual sexism of Senate Republicans was thrust into the mainstream.
While committee Democrats questioned Ford directly, Republicans opted to hire an outside lawyer for fear that they would look bad interrogating a sexual assault survivor. Despite this foresight, they still somehow managed to paint themselves in some awful hues. While Ford spoke eloquently and calmly, Kavanaugh's temper fluctuated pretty substantially over the course of the hearing, even being moved to tears by telling his own account of the story (seriously, she survived sexual assault and she's not even crying!). Ford stuck to her story, while there were notable inconsistencies in Kavanaugh's testimony.
Even so, Republicans chose to ignore Kavanaugh's shortcomings and attack Ford's credibility as a witness. They argued that since she could not remember when she arrived at and left the party in question, there was not enough evidence to say that Kavanaugh actually did it. This is fair, but when taken into the context of what followed, it seems much more sinister.
Senator Lindsay Graham called the trial a sham and accused Democrats and Dr. Ford of political motivations for the accusation. Apart from not even pretending to believe that Dr. Ford was telling the truth, the hearing made for some rage inducing soundbites. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, when asked about Dr. Ford's testimony, said she was an attractive woman. I mean....what?! That has nothing to do with anything and only shows where your mind is really at. Don't worry, it gets worse.
Senator Lindsey Graham from Utah went on to say "You're supposed to be Bill Cosby when you're a junior or senior in high school."
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!?! I mean, I knew you believed it before, but you can't just...say it out loud. My main fear about this trial was whether or not Dr. Ford would be believed, but now I realize the most important takeaway from this: they did believe her, they just didn't care. Come November, this is why we need to make our voices heard, so that people like this, who call sexual assault survivors "attractive" or just dismiss it altogether, aren't the ones making these important decisions because this will always be a problem unless we use our voices to solve it.
