Books I Want to Read in 2017

Let the Goodreads challenge begin.

There are only two ways in which I can read a book: I either binge read (devour an entire book or series in one sitting) or polygamist read (read multiple books in small pieces simultaneously). I plan to use both of these methods to meet my Goodreads 2017 Reading Challenge of reading 35 books. Here are a few of the titles in my TBR pile.

SERIES I WANT TO FINISH:

1. Anne of Green Gables Series ~ Lucy Maud Montgomery

I jumped into this series in the middle. I've already read Anne of the Island and Anne of Windy Poplars. I'm currently in Anne's House of Dreams, and I plan going back to the first two books before reading the last three. So far, Anne of the Island has been my favorite because Anne going through college is both charming and hilarious.

2. The Snow Like Ashes Series ~ Sara Raasch

This series is a bit more more on the fantasy side of what I usually read, but the world of Primoria is so intriguing. Ice Like Fire ended on a major cliff hanger, so I mostly want to finish the series to find out how the writer gets the characters out of the chasm (pun there) she's dug for them.

3. The Lone City Trilogy ~ Amy Ewing

This series is so disturbing I can't stop reading it. I totally sped through The Jewel and The White Rose. The covers look tame and girly, but don't let that fool you. These books explore slavery, the sex trade, economics, and animal cruelty in a provocative way.

4. The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

My boyfriend introduced me to the LOTR movies when we first started dating and I fell in love with Tolkien's world. I'm partway into The Fellowship of the Ring, but it's kind of slow-going. Definitely polygamy-reading this series.

5. The Golden Road ~ Lucy Maud Montgomery

As much as I love the Anne of Green Gables series, The Story Girl is my favorite of L.M. Montgomery's books. Written from the perspective of a young boy, The Story Girl and it's sequel The Golden Road follow the King children throughout their hilarious childhood shenanigans. There is also a TV show based on these characters called Road to Avonlea by Sullivan Entertainment. It's my all-time favorite show!

SERIES I WANT TO START:

6. The River of Time: California ~ Lisa T. Bergren

I have been on a major book hangover ever since reading the original River of Time series (consisting of four novels and two novellas) this past year. If time travel, sword fighting, swoon-worthy Italian knights, romance, and adventure is your thing, you MUST read these books! I'm so excited to find out what Lisa T. Bergen does with this new series, which takes place in Old-West California!

7. Tiny Pretty Things ~ Sona Charaipotra & Dhonielle Clayton

This two-book series is two of my favorite things - YA and Ballet - combined. Yes please! Bring on the twirls, tutus, point shoes, and rivalry!

8. Ivory and Bone ~ Julie Eshbaugh

Think Pride and Prejudice + mammoths and cavemen (this = intriguing, to me). Apparently this is a trilogy set in pre-historic times based loosely on Jane Austen's most beloved novel. I'll probably end up reading this based on curiosity alone.

9. The Time-Travel Fashionista ~ Bianca Turetsky

Imagine slipping into a vintage dress and suddenly finding yourself whisked back into that time period. That's the premise of these books, which is the ultimate dream-come-true for any vintage clothing lover (like me!). I'm so excited to find out what happens when Louise finds herself On Board the Titanic, At the Palace of Marie Antoinette, and with Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile!

10. Charlotte Holmes ~ Brittany Cavallaro

Sherlock Holmes reimagined as a teenage girl? Yes. A Study in Charlotte is the first in a trilogy that follows Charlotte Holmes, Sherlock's great-great-great-granddaughter, who just happens to have a pal by the name of Jamie Watson. Let the mystery and intrigue begin!

STAND-ALONE FICTION I WANT TO FINISH:

11. The Book Thief ~ Markus Zusak

I am in awe of this book. It is so masterfully-crafted that it blows me away over and over and over. From the narrator of the story, to the imagery of the colors, to the lovable characters and its somber reflection on history, it is just incredible. I'm about halfway through it.

STAND-ALONE FICTION I WANT TO START:

12. Replica ~ Lauren Oliver

There are so many ways to read this book! You can read Lyra first, read Gemma first, alternate between them every other chapter, or flip back and forth whenever you wish! Every reader gets to create their own experience with this story. I haven't decided which way I'll read it yet...

NON-FICTION I WANT TO FINISH:

13. Child Star ~ Shirley Temple Black

I saw the movie based on this book and wanted to know more so I started reading it. The behind-the-scenes look at the film industry in the 30s is fascinating!

NON-FICTION I WANT TO START:

14. Dick Van Dyke: My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business ~ Dick Van Dyke

Who doesn't love Dick Van Dyke? He just gets more adorable with age. I am so excited that he wrote a book and I can't wait to read it!

GRAPHIC NOVELS I WANT TO READ:

15. Adulthood is a Myth ~ Sarah Andersen

If you don't know who Sarah Andersen is, go to her website right now - http://sarahcandersen.com. Just do it. These are the most hilariously accurate doodles of adult life I have ever seen!

16. Big Mushy Happy Lump ~ Sarah Andersen

This second collection of hilarious doodles has a sweet relational twist. My favorite piece in this collection (that I've seen so far) is entitled "Alternative Boyfriend Uses". Look it up.

So that's the current TBR pile. (I know that's only 16 out of 35 books, but I had to save room for the new books coming out this year!)

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
