Books are a way of escaping reality. Too many people books provide adventure, knowledge and feelings. One in particular book that I have taken a special liking to is 1984" by George Orwell.
The novel "1984," by George Orwell, has had a significant impact in the way I view freedom in the United States. This book has opened my eyes to how a society could be run.
Having a democracy allows citizens to voice opinions. With our ballots, we are able to have an input on the government. Regulations are in place to make sure the government does not gain too much power as well. We take so many of our freedoms for granted, like the first amendment. The United States is the only country to have freedom of speech. The first amendment makes it possible for people to say whatever they want within reason without being subject to consequence. Winston did not have the ability to voice opinions let alone to have thoughts, which is something unfathomable to me.
Winston decided to go against the law and vigorously write in a secret journal. He wanted to preserve his innermost thoughts to read and refer back to. Not being able to express emotion or ideas would lead to having robotic citizens in society. People would essentially be nothing, just living to make sure the government did not crumble. The psychological damage of always thinking that someone is watching would be detrimental to the human psyche.
Winston had to be directed to exercise at a certain time of day. He did not have the option to opt out, it was forced upon him. This rigid day to day structure would be hard to live by for anyone. The government manipulated people into being so fearful that they would not dare to protest. People were subject to harsh punishment if they disobeyed the all mighty “Big Brother” system. In the United States, people are able to keep some matters private. However, that would not be the case if monitors were tracking each and every move. The eyes of “Big Brother” never stopped glaring.
Orwell’s message was always to question and not be blinded by the government. The ability to think, feel and live should not be taken so lightly. America is not perfect, but I appreciate all the freedoms we do have.
