Since summer break is in full swing, it is definitely time for swimsuit season. Going into the pool or some form of water is one of the best and only ways to tolerate this Arizona heat. With the higher temperatures, people practically live in their swimsuits. Ads showing models in their bikinis are everywhere, and everyone is trying to get that perfect "beach body" for summer.
Okay, well, not all of us are going for that. I am personally trying to see how many slushies I can get this summer without gaining a ton of weight, but that is a story for another day. Recently, I have noticed how more and more people are starting to comment on what a perfect body is... and I don't like it at all.
Typically, in ads, you will see really thin models dressed in less clothing and their plus-sized counterparts are a lot more clothed. Why is this? There is nothing wrong with either of the models, and each should be able to wear a swimsuit in an ad without people thinking one of them is fat.
When I was younger, I struggled so much with my weight. I wasn't thin like the other girls around me, but I wasn't heavy either. I had such a warped image of myself because I was trying to fit a mold I was never made for in the first place.
These ads that depict thinner women as more ideal are so misleading to women like me who were never created to look like that. Being thin may be desired for some, but I would rather focus on being healthy and taking care of my body. Having a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise is so much more important than trying to achieve a body that may be unattainable.
I know many plus-sized or fuller women who work out all the time, eat healthy, and they still aren't extremely thin. That is okay. Every person should have the ability to feel comfortable in their own skin. If they aren't, it is up to them and only them to work on themselves to make them feel better. No one else should have a say in how someone should look, ever.
There is so much hate in this world, and fat-shaming should not contribute to it. While people will always have nasty stuff to say on the internet, it is up to the rest of us to make sure we are loving people regardless of who they are. I sincerely hope that my future daughter never has to go through the weight struggles I did when I was younger. I want to live in a world where you are judged based on your personality and not simply your appearance.
Everybody has a summer body, and people need to start realizing that. So, go put on that swimsuit. Hop in that pool. Take pictures with your friends. You are perfect the way you are, and no one can tell you different.
