Normally, the VMA's, awards hosted by MTV, are not on my radar. But I missed out this year. Why? This year a few artists brought a raw side to music and self-worth, including Alessia Cara and P!nk. Here are a few highlights.
Alessia Cara, an incredible singer and song writer, delivered a positive message about accepting yourself and body positivity through her performance "scars to your beautiful." She was undressed from what is expected of performing artists to who she is, a young girl comfortable wearing a tank top and pants to an awards show.
Another role model worthy performance came from Demi Lovato, who had confidence for days, something I wish I had. Performing "sorry not sorry," she strutted down a catwalk, owning the stage. After years of self-improvement as she fought against many obstacles in her life, Demi conquered.
Lorde also did amazing, refusing to lip sync as she had the flu and couldn't sing. But she danced as if no one was watching, being purely herself and loving every moment. The ability to do your best at your worst is truly exceptional.
But we cannot forget P!nk, who performed a medley and, upon accepting the Micheal Jackson Video Vanguard award, gave the sweetest speech about her daughter and the importance of staying true to yourself. As a mother, and an amazing human being, she did what she felt best to show her daughter that changing yourself for the world is useless.
(But also Kesha because she came out some dark events and is still standing.)
As an older cousin, sibling, aunt, and young adult, these performers' words touched my heart. No one should ever doubt themselves and let another's negative words take hold. We should show others the beauty of this world and never change the real and unique parts of ourselves. Thank you to all the performers who have carried this message because hearing those words is important, no matter how old you are.
And for those who I didn't mention but are amazing advocates, keep doing what you are doing. We need more people like you in this world.
