Body Acceptance Should Not Encourage Obesity

The Problem With The HAES Movement

With summer coming just around the corner, I have been noticing an increase in the number of body positivity related posts on various social media outlets. Swimsuits are starting to pop up everywhere in stores, and as a result, many people are embracing dressing how they want for the pool. As a feminist, I fully support these women and their decisions to wear whatever pleases them.

However, I do not support body-shaming of any size and promoting obesity.

There are various members of the HAES (Health At Every Size) Movement that are guilty of the two things stated above.

I have encountered people in my life and online that shame skinny people, calling them "anorexic twigs." While the amount of prejudice that obese people face far outnumbers what skinny people face, I believe that the HAES Movement needs to practice what they preach. If they are going to preach body positivity, then they need to be positive and accepting of all shapes and sizes, and that includes skinny people.

Before you say "the world doesn't revolve around you skinny people, obviously we accept all sizes and it's the bigger people that need focusing on right now," let me remind you that I fullheartedly agree that skinny people are more accepted into society; that is how the modern world is right now. However, I am just saying practice what you preach, since there are many instances of skinny-shaming by "body-positive supporters."

In addition, I believe that you can be beautiful no matter what size you are. I have seen some gorgeous women who range from all different weights.

However, I do not believe that being overweight should be the ideal goal for everyone to strive for. You can't deny that being active and fit has the most health benefits for your body.

Being overweight puts a serious toll on your body, and the human skeleton is not designed to hold an excess amount of weight. When this happens, the body starts to encounter problems, such as fluctuating glucose levels, heart problems and back problems, just to name a few.

No one should strive to remain unfit, unhealthy and overweight. Everyone should try and be healthy to some degree; if they don't, then that is completely fine. Just do not impose being unhealthy on others.

Remember that body acceptance does not equal glorifying obesity. Being obese is a type of disease, and no one should strive to obtain a disease. While this is an extreme comparison, take cancer, for example, cancer takes a serious toll on the human body. It can even cause a change in one's physical appearance, such as making someone look more sickly or make them lose their hair due to chemotherapy. However, people with cancer can still be beautiful and they should be allowed to be confident in their looks. Although they can be beautiful, no one should strive to have cancer.

I have just seen hate in the HAES Community where members will try to lead a more healthy lifestyle and lose a little weight. Some members lash back, arguing that by losing weight, you are saying that fat is not beautiful and that you are caving into society's definition of beauty. This is completely illogical in my eyes.

Like I said earlier, everyone should try and strive to be active and healthy. The hateful members of the HAES Community should realize that yes, everyone can be beautiful at any size, but the main goal is to live a long and healthy, pain-free life. An excellent way to do this is to make sure your body is well taken care of and to treat it well.

If there is anything I want you to take from this article, it is that I am not a fat-hater. I believe you can be beautiful at any size, and that everyone deserves to feel confident no matter what they are wearing. Additionally, I believe that everyone should strive to be the healthiest version of themselves that they can be since being healthy will result in a comfortable life.

Some members of the HAES movement are promoting obesity as the ideal body goal, which is wrong in my opinion. The ideal body type is the healthiest one, but no one should be shamed if they do not reach this healthy goal. Body acceptance does not equal the promotion of obesity. Everyone is beautiful, but not everyone is healthy, and that is a fact.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
