BLM, KKK, and America

Racial Oppression in America

Let’s take a huge leap back in time to around the 1500’s. Portuguese and Spanish settlers brought Africans to America and sold them off. Though slavery started so long ago it wasn’t legalized by the American government until the 1640’s. When put on the plantation slaves were either given housing or allowed to build their own houses. The slaves who worked in the house were given better housing near the main house. They were also given better food and clothes. Some were given pots and pans for cooking but often not and they had to make their own. Slaves would be given a pair of shoes and three pieces of underwear every year but they were made of coarse material. To keep them alive some slaves were given a small piece of land to grow food so they may eat.

It did take time for African-Americans to be considered human. The slave trade ended in 1807 but slavery itself ended in 1865. Still African Americans were not considered humans. They weren’t allowed to go to school for a long time and could only work certain jobs.

Then comes the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) which was started around the end of the civil war. Based on the hate of black people, and the idea that white people are superior the KKK was started. Though it started as a small secret society it grew and from there lynching's and night raids, murder, and destroying property started to happening. What the KKK is most known for is how their members are from different social classes. Republicans, police, and other people high in power are known to be members of it. Over time the Klan grew and also disappeared though it is active now.

BLM is a group that's also surprisingly compared to the KKK. BLM (Black Lives Matter) is a movement which focuses on rebuilding the black liberation movement. Though some argue that BLM is a racist movement that incites hate on police officers and white people in general. BLM is trying to bring attention to how colored people are deprived of basic rights in America. Though it does get compared to the KKK, it also get compared to the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party was an organization created to fight against white oppression, which is the same fight BLM is trying to achieve for colored people in America.

History affects how the future is formed. If you can do something to change the future for the better, please do it cause we need it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
