"Black Panther" FINALLY hit theaters Presidents Day Weekend and it was everything I ever dreamed it could be. They hype surrounding this movie was incredible, I already knew I would love it before I even got in the theater. And let me tell you, walking into that theater to see this movie was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen; there were unapologetic Bantu Knots, Kente Cloths, Dashikis, beautiful tribal print gowns, and gorgeous Afros. It was glorious.
There was such a sense of unity in that theater, I’ve never seen anything like it. After watching the movie, I knew I was going to go see it again. It was filled with so many cultural references and strong female characters (I freaking LOVED these female warriors), not to mention some pretty awesome one-liners, below are some of my favorites.
"Stand up, you are a king."
This line really got me. When T’Chala came face to face with his father and knelt down before him to apologize for not being able to save his life. He was not having it. Without an ounce of sympathy, he demanded that his son remember who he was. I was sitting on a row with a family of five or so little boys and they needed to see this moment, they needed to know that when you are royalty there is absolutely nothing that can take that crown away from you.
"Hi, Auntie."
This line from Erik Kilmonger was hilarious. It reminded me of when my cousin gets in trouble with my mom and he smiles real big at her like that’s supposed to get him out of trouble. He sounds just like Erik did. And no, calling my mom Auntie with a big smile didn’t work any better than it did on the Queen Mother.
"Don’t scare me like that colonizer."
Okay, so I want to start off by saying Princess Shuri is officially number one on my favorite Princess list. This girl is a genius, she responsible for much of the awesome technology in modern-day Wakanda and despite getting crap for being the teenage girl her brother lets “play” in the laboratory she remains unapologetic in her calling.
Princess Shuri is what it means to have Black Girl Magic and I want to be like her when I grow up. My favorite line from her in this movie is when the CIA Agent bends the corner and startles her she starts and says, “Don’t scare me like that, colonizer,” and the theatre erupted in surprised laughter, this is what it means to be unapologetic. Thank you for this lesson Princess Shuri.
"Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors, who knew that death was better than bondage."
Erik again, for a guy that was supposed to be evil he had some AMAZING lines in this movie! This is another line that just settled down into my bones and sat with me long after I left the theatre. There really isn’t much I can say about it when faced with a truth like this its best to just sit and let it settle with you and resonate with you.
"It’s like a space Bugatti."
I loved that this movie ended with a resolve to be an active part in the African American community, and having Princess Shuri shine in her element teaching you kids about some of the things she’s invented was amazing. And watching King T’Chala claim every building on the block? I loved it, pouring back into our communities is so important and I’m glad they did it in this movie
I'm definitely going to see this movie in theaters again, I heard it was even better in 3D!
