These Are The Black-Owned Restaurants In Chicago You Should Absolutely Be Supporting

The Black Lives Matter movement is taking the country by storm to crash down systematic racism and liberate people of color. However, during these changing it can be hard to determine what you can do to make an impact besides reposting Instagram stories and texting petition numbers. Instead, support Black-owned businesses or, more specifically, Black-owned restaurants. Here are some outstanding and underrated Black-owned restaurants in Chicago that can help you support the movement.

Batter and Berries

Batter and Berries

A small shop tucked away on N Lincoln Ave still manages to catch the eye against the spanning brick storefronts with their signature banana yellow awning and purple writing that says "Batter & Berries" to match the front door. The breakfast/brunch spot owners Dr. Tanya and Craig Richardson are committed to using the freshest ingredients possible intermixing the warmness of southern comfort food.

Their infamous french toasts flights take away the struggle of trying to choose just one thing by giving samples of each flavor (strawberry, blueberry, lemon, caramel). Customers have come from across the United States and even internationally to taste their signature french toast flights and other amazing dishes. This will be the new brunch place you never knew you needed but now can never live without.

Can’t Believe its Not Meat

Calling all vegans and vegetarians to 1368 E 53rd St! This plant-based restaurant in Hyde Park is serving American classics that could fool any meat lover.

Owner, Laricia Chandler, designed a menu that takes staples from around the country like "Hold up! Wait a Min!" Philly cheesesteak, "Chicago St." Hot Dog, and "Lil Italy" Lasagna and revamps them to fit any dietary restrictions or preferences.

Vegan and vegetarians can rediscover the meals they once loved and meat-eaters can be introduced to the world of vegan food that goes beyond tofu and salads. Everyone will leave this place feeling happy, full, and satisfied.

Truth Italian Restaurant

Located in the center of Bronzeville, Truth brings Chicagoans authentic Italian cuisine for everyone to enjoy with a modern flare. The menu is slightly reserved compared to other bistros because each dish was extensively tested by the owner, Peyton Willborn, head chef, Chef Larry, and acclaimed critics to ensure the best quality product for customers.

They have intimate indoor seating perfect for special events or date nights and an outstanding outdoor patio for when the weather is just too good to stay inside. Dishes include bruschetta, steak marsala, fresh crab cakes and marinated lamb chops. Truth even offers a daily breakfast/brunch menu from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. including french toast flights and a wide variety of waffles and omelets.

The Delta

The Delta

An ode to the Mississippi Delta region, a once-prominent hub for cotton production and cultural center for Italian, Chinese, and African cuisine, owner, Eldridge Williams, aims to recreate that environment with their food and cocktails.

Their Wicker Park location boasts worn in wooden tables and old southern details which makes one feel like they are sitting in a grandmother's porch in the mid-summer heat.

The menu is far from ordinary with an assortment of fresh tamales, southern hush puppies, Asian bao buns, and fried green tomatoes. The Delta offers brunch on the weekends and has special happy hour and late-night menus.

Soule

Soule Chciago

This West Town boutique restaurant has masted the art of Creole-inspired soul food that fills your heart as much as your belly. Owner, Bridgette Flagg, wanted dishes inspired by Creole and southern cuisines and flavors that brought the community together.

She wants her restaurant to be a place with comfort food that brings together friends and family. The restaurant has been a favorite sport for many since its beginnings in 2017 and has even opened its doors to many celebrities over the years. Their menu is full of classic southern dishes like a catfish po'boy, jerk shrimp, fried chicken and grits.

In our patriarchal society, men hide from their feelings, but toxic masculinity is literally killing men. They swallow the pain and move on so that they can look, feel, and act "tough."

But, strength is derived from asking for help and voicing your struggle and, trust me, working on your mental health is one hell of a struggle. The real way to "man up" is to acknowledge the downfalls in unjust societal norms. Mental health problems do not mean that a man is weak, they are neurologically-based disorders that require professional treatment.

Sorry, But 'I Don’t Care About Politics' Is Not A Valid Excuse For NOT Voting

The younger generation of voters is so crucial to the upcoming election because our vote is going to shape the world that we are about to enter as adults.

27794

When I ask my friends if they are voting this term most of them respond with "no" followed by an explanation of "I don't care enough," "It doesn't affect me," or "I don't keep up with politics," etc. I get it, as a college student I know that there are many other things to be concerned about like school, relationships, work, and friends. I also understand that keeping up with politics can seem like trying to keep up with an over-exaggerated reality show that has way too many seasons. Not to mention most news stations and websites are biased so it's hard to decipher if what you hear is true or fake.

However, despite all of this annoyance, as the next generation of Americans, we have to remember that we owe it to ourselves, our families, and to our futures to care.

Two of my favorite things in life are reading and books. Obviously, they go hand-in-hand. In my life, I've realized that there is nothing better than learning about the current world or getting fully immersed in another world. Reading can inspire, teach, and entertain you.

For me, the feeling of opening a book and smelling that fresh book smell can't compete with anything else.

20 Books About Latin And Hispanic Heritage Absolutely Everyone Should Have On Their Bookshelf

Any ally of the community needs to be reading these incredible reads.

I go through phases when it comes to what I like to read. I am typically reading two books at any given time: one serious nonfiction and one escapist fiction novel to have on hand and open up depending on my mood.

What remains consistent, however, amongst most of my fellow bibliophiles is a desire to try new and different authors and genres. I, as an Indian woman, have been partial to reading books written by fellow Indian and Desi writers since I first got a library card.

I Asked 46 Women What They Thought About The Term 'Plus-Size', And Here's What They Had To Say

It's 2020, where change is inevitable and norms are not only questioned, but challenged.

4664

We live in a world where it's become customary to push boundaries, break rules, and question standards upheld by society. Though try as we might, some of these standards are harder to conquer than others — body image is one of the top contenders.

For years, the body positivity movement has pushed for the acceptance of all marginalized body types not represented or celebrated in the media. Recently, we've gotten better at appreciating and accepting all body types, but one thing that's still lingering is the stigma of body image in the fashion industry — more specifically, the term "plus-size."

Throughout quarantine, something that a lot of us picked up on was working out. With all the free time, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to work on that "dream bod" you've been wanting for years, or to just feel good about yourself.
