Black Is Beautiful, Too

The color of my skin doesn't prohibit me from opportunities, racism does.

Black Is Beautiful, Too

In recent news, Southern Methodist University has been plagued with the unfortunate stupidity that has cast a discriminatory shadow over this wonderful university. The shadow: black girls are not worthy to be in a Panhellenic sorority because of various reasons.

The first point shows the ignorance: you are making a racist post, and you call your targets racist? And just because there is a black sorority doesn't mean that I have to stick to that sorority. I have options, and I should be able to pick for myself where I want to go—the choice should not be made for me by the likes of people such as yourself.

And black women are aesthetically unpleasing, you say?

Where? Where are the aesthetically unpleasing black women?

I am not seeing it. And I hope you don't mean that the color of our skin just makes us ugly, because that is an asinine comment and grossly incorrect.

Now for this nonsense, I have friends in sororities that have already made it clear that they would help me if I so wished to join a sorority, but it's people like you that make it hard. I could have all the right recommendations and support and still not get in, because let's just face it: You. Are. Racist.

And my high school was far from crappy. We were among the top schools both academically and in football in our district. And having graduated in the top 5 percent of my 500-sized senior class with a 3.84 GPA makes me more than qualified to attend Southern Methodist University.

Our personalities suck? I would dare say that your personality is lacking for using suck, an adolescent term to describe someone's personality in the first place. What are you trying to prove, besides making yourself look ignorant in a generalized list of insults? If you are going to insult me, I ask that you be original in your approach.

To say that all black women are boring is ridiculous. I for one have never been informed that I hold boring conversations. Want to know the secret to my success? I talk about a variety of topics with a variety of people. I don't limit myself to makeup and boys, I expand my horizons to include the works of my favorite author, Edgar Allan Poe, music artists ranging from Metallica to Mozart, books from "Wuthering Heights" to "The Tale of Two Cities," and some politics in between. If you don't find being surrounded by people who are exactly like you boring, then I—quite frankly—don't trust your idea of what is boring.

You want to insult me as a person based on what you've seen me do and how I act, that's fine. Insulting every single black woman who might want to join a Panhellenic sorority with foolish descriptions? That's unacceptable. People like you are scared, and so you try and retaliate by using racism as backup. This is the 21st century, and old, backward thinking such as that will get you nowhere. Diversity is not a suggestion, it is a part of evolution, it will happen, and just as those weaker species that tried to hold on to old ways faded into history. So will you and people that share your same thoughts about us. Now, let me give you a piece of advice: get over yourself and realize that black is beautiful too...

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
