A Bittersweet Goodbye To Summer

Hello, fall.

We are halfway through October, and as much as I hate to admit it, summer is on its last legs and fall is coming. Winter is also coming (shout out to my Game of Thrones fans). When I think about the end of summer, I always get hit with a wave of sadness. Summer is such a great season, but like all good things it must end.

Summer is the best, mostly because we don’t have school. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if I waste my summer away playing video games and hanging at the local pool. If anything, I might be even busier in the summer than I am during the school year. Between work, internships, volunteering, travelling and hanging with friends, summer can be super busy. But that’s what’s great about it. Every summer is different and as I look back on it, this summer, just like all the other ones, has blessed me with so many great stories and memories.

Obviously, we are back at school now, classes have started back up, and the stress of the semester is starting to build. But as I reflect on it, the end of summer isn’t necessarily all that bad. For example, this is a great time of year for sports. The MLB playoff race is coming to a climax. In the Tennis world, an exciting US Open just concluded. NFL football is back, and in the soccer world, major European Leagues as well as the Champions League have started up.

Another thing I love about this time of the year is the weather. Fall weather is the best, not too cold, not too hot, and the changing of the foliage is gorgeous, especially here at Seton Hall. Yet, the best part about this time of year, at least for me, is that since school has started up we get to see all of the people that we didn’t get a chance to connect with over the summer.

It truly is bittersweet. At first I’m sad when I think about my good friend, summer, leaving for the rest of the year. However, when I really think about it, there’s so much to look forward to. Life is good!

Sure, I’ll miss the beach days. I’ll miss my friends from home. I’ll miss having no homework. Mostly, I’ll miss sleeping in. But, Fall is a great time of the year as well. Autumn brings us football Sundays, pumpkin spiced everything, and of course, Halloween. So, enough with those “I miss summer” Instagram posts. We all miss it but we can all have a great Fall season as well. Make this fall one worth missing when winter arrives (cue the white walkers).

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
