Hulu recently has come out with a new series called "The Act", a true crime anthology drama series. Basically, the "Black Mirror" of crime shows and everyone is raving about it. The first season follows the true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, DeeDee, who suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. In other terms, DeeDee would consistently make herself, her daughter, and others believe Gypsy was chronically ill. In this case, DeeDee would shave Gypsys' head to make people perceive her as a cancer patient, she put her in a wheelchair and convinced the world that Gypsy could not walk. The whole time this is going on, Gypsy is perfectly healthy. She finds out she can walk during the season and the scene will give you chills.
Her mother also convinces Gypsy herself, and the neighbors that she is allergic to sugar throughout the show. Gypsy constantly tries to take sips of Coke, eat cupcakes, and other unhealthy foods, making her mom go crazy. A doctor that the two attend eventually figures out that Gypsy is probably not allergic to sugar since the medication she is on has loads of sugar in it. This leads DeeDee to cut ties with the particular doctor.
The whole reason DeeDee continues to put on this "act", is because the world feels sympathy towards Gypsy and the unlucky circumstances she claims to have. The couple was given thousands of dollars from donations and the house they reside in during the series was built by Habitat For Humanity. In my opinion, DeeDee truly was a master manipulator in all aspects. She had everyone fooled and was able to mooch money for many years by forcing her daughter to act a certain way.
Although the last few episodes have not been released yet, the most recent episode is truly where the drama started to unfold. Gypsy is starting to realize she may not be the age her mother claims she is. She has feelings towards men now and wants to build new relationships outside of the one with DeeDee. It is clear that Gypsy is having some sort of sexual awakening, and this leads her to start lying and contacting men over the Internet.
Now, I won't spoil the show anymore, you need to watch it for yourself. The ending is spectacular if you know what eventually happens. This is definitely a show you don't want to miss. Throughout the show, I felt extremely sorry for this type of child- abuse that Gypsy was burdened with and watching her figure out her mom was lying is really exciting to see.
