This past summer, I spent a lot of my downtime reading and finding new books to add to my list. I was able to read many, but one book in particular blew my mind and changed my thought process completely.
“Big Magic” is a novel by Elizabeth Gilbert that discusses the importance of a creative life, and living beyond fear. By reading just a short description, it may not seem too interesting or unique, but I felt so refreshed and empowered after reading it. I am an Arts Management major, so I am forced to think creatively almost every day. I also love music and writing, which also keeps me on a steady creative path.
When it comes to fear, I never really realized the power it has over the creative process. It is easy to say we all get a little scared to share our thoughts or inspirations with others. We tend to be fearful of judgment and failure so easily. I have always related to this, and went into reading this book knowing that already. However, Elizabeth Gilbert writes so honestly about what fear does exactly to the creative mind and how it can create so many limits. At one point, she compares our relationship with fear to a car ride. She explains how important it is to not let fear drive or get anywhere near the steering wheel. We have to take complete control and become confident in our creative process.
This comparison is something I think about so much, and I am now able to remind myself of it every time I find myself settling in that fear. I picture Elizabeth Gilbert in my head saying, “What are you doing?!! Why is fear in the driver’s seat?!! Kick it out!! That is your spot!!!”
As a writer, Gilbert shares some of her own personal stories and thoughts which are very relatable and comforting as well. She became such a huge inspiration for me after reading this book. I simply cannot say enough good things about it. If you are involved in a creative or artistic mind set in any way, this novel full of confidence and inspiration is waiting.
