A little over a month ago I turned 21... and I went WILD.
...I am totally kidding
I went out to lunch with my best friend, even ordered a sangria. Then, I had dinner with my family and drank a scorpion bowl. Definitely not wild.
But guess what?
My 21st birthday was one of my favorite birthdays.
We often build up expectations of what our 21st birthday should be. Going out and taking shots with your best friends. Going a little too wild and feeling it the next morning. And if you want to do that, I say go for it! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But my 21st wasn't like that, and that's perfectly okay, too. The expectation for 21st birthdays is a little unrealistic. Sure, going out bar hopping with friends is some people's idea of a good time, but for me, a quiet day and night with the people who appreciate my low-key nature was perfect.
It's okay not to be hungover the next day. It's okay not to get drunk. It's okay to spend a quiet day with friends and family. It's okay to simply go out to eat and order alcohol, just because you can. It's okay to not have a thrill-filled day.
There will be plenty of opportunities to get the dreaded hangover-- your 21st doesn't have to be that time. So if you're turning 21 in the near future, don't stress it. Just enjoy your day and do whatever you want to do. In the end, it's your day. No one else's expectations should matter as long as you are living up to your own.
