If you're from a small town like myself, you've probably always wondered what life would be like in a big city. I've always had a fantasy in my head about how much I would love living in a large city. This week I got an opportunity to travel to one of those big cities. Miami is famed for being one of the most fun places to visit. Between their seafood on Miami Beach to their famous "Ocean Drive", it's nothing short of beautiful.
But traveling here has taught me a lot. I take my small town for granted. I never realized how nice it is to be able to drive without having 5 lanes of traffic with people driving at least 90 miles an hour. I also never realized how easy it is to be able to drive 3 miles from home to grab sometime to eat and be back within 15 minutes. In Miami, everything takes longer because of the amount of people wanting to do the same thing you're trying to do.
Don't get me wrong, I do love this city, but not for anything more than a vacation now and then. I would never be able to live here or in any other big city for that matter. People from small towns often don't realize how easy they've got it. That's exactly how I was, but heed this advice and travel there for a vacation before you decide to move there.
People often don't appreciate the things they have until they're gone, but start appreciating your small town before you leave it. It doesn't seem important now, but one day you'll miss everyone knowing your name and knowing what your family has been up to. You'll miss hearing the silence at night when you sleep instead of traffic outside the window, and you will most definitely miss the small buildings and homey atmosphere. These are the things I would miss if I had to live here at all times. If you're anything like me, so would you.
