Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization whose mission is to "provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever."
I became a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters because I wanted to make a difference in someone's life. I'm the youngest of three, and I've always wanted a younger sibling. Through BBBS I was able to have a little sister. My little sister is the oldest of four, so she was able to have an older sibling that she has always wanted as well. I have been able to give my Little so many opportunities in the past six months that she probably wouldn't have been able to have otherwise. We carved her first pumpkin together and she got to go ice skating for the first time. It's also really awesome to be matched with a little sister who shares common interests—such as crafts— with me. We've done a lot of crafty things, like decorate Christmas tree ornaments and painting wall decor. There is no price set on what we have to do, so we can just simply watch a movie and talk (which we have) or go out and do something. What matters is being a part of her life and giving her someone who's not a family member that she can talk to.
Not only have I been able to impact her life, but she has also had a big impact on mine. Being a Big makes me accountable for something. It helps me to make sure that I'm acting like a good role model and it gives me a sense of purpose. She's given me the opportunity to be to her what I needed when I was her age. I enjoy being able to give her advice and help her pursue her dreams. And I will forever be grateful for her.
So, if you have the means to do so, I urge you to become a part of this wonderful organization. There are so many children just waiting to be matched with a Big, especially boys. I promise you wont regret it.
