Yesterday, Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin released a video on Facebook in which he challenged the Democratic controlled Kentucky House of Representatives to "get to work" on a budget bill.
In the video, Bevin says that it's a "little after 11 o'clock" on Monday morning. He then heads into the House chambers, where he acts surprised to see an empty room.
"What do you know, nothing," he said. This is where I stopped watching.
The House doesn't convene until 2 p.m. on Mondays, and a lot of times it's actually a little after.

Does the Governor of our Commonwealth really not know when the House is in session, and beyond that, does he really believe all of the House's business is conducted on the floor?
I think the answers to both of those questions are no -- the Governor knows good and well how the legislative process works. He knows that the budget (and any other legislation) is hammered out in committee meetings and smaller conferences in the Capitol Annex building. He knows that the House convenes in the afternoon on Mondays, and it's convenient that he didn't visit the GOP-controlled Senate chambers on Monday morning, which were also empty at that time.
And so that brings me back to my original question: is Governor Bevin a liar or is he really that foolish?
The Democrat in me wants to answer by saying (very clearly and maliciously) both, but the political science student and the writer in me says this: the Governor is clearly putting on a show, but he's banking on you being foolish for the propaganda to work.
And in my mind, that's why Matt Bevin is the worst kind of politician. I'm not talking about austerity measures, Planned Parenthood clinics, education reform, or any of the other policy issues our state government is dealing with during this legislative session.
I'm talking about public trust, and the fact that our Governor believes his constituents to be stupid.
I'm talking about public trust, and the fact that our Governor believes his constituents to be stupid.
Bevin's video has absolutely nothing to do with the budget, and it has nothing to do with the House. It has to do with a special election, and the fact that today, four of Kentucky's House districts are deciding the fate of our state government.
It has to do with the fact that Bevin's sole interest is winning elections, advancing his party, and dividing Kentuckians along party lines.
If Matt Bevin were a man and a politician of principle, he wouldn't make videos that lie about what's happening in our state government.
If Matt Bevin believed in Kentucky, then he would also believe our people to be smart enough to see through a gimmick like this.
Lucky for him, we are, we do, and we're listening.
It doesn't matter if you're a Republican or a Democrat -- Kentucky deserves better than this.
