It's that time of year. Bethel students have moved out for the summer, and the incoming freshman class is about to graduate. Congratulations are due all around. Bethel University Class of 2020, this one is for you guys. I asked members of the class of 2019 for their best advice to incoming freshman, and they delivered. Here are 13 tips, tricks, and words of wisdom, paraphrased for brevity and commented upon by yours truly.

1. "Stock up on bananas from the DC" - Nicholas Lee

Bananas are a healthy, simple snack, and they are the easiest of all of the DC foods to sneak past Sodexo Bob (pictured above).

2. "Get a planner (and use it)" - Alissa Monroe

"They can be life changing." Write anything and everything in your planner. Homework, to-do lists, goals for the week and semester, Bible verses...literally anything. If you use it to its fullest potential, it will be your lifeline.

3. "Remember to journal as often as you can" - Sydney Parkinson

I can vouch for this. It is so easy to forget little moments that meant a lot to you at the time, and at the end of the year, I am really wishing I had spent more time journaling those experiences.

4. "Make use of the Heritage pool at least once" - Sophie Wilson

Having a pool on campus is such a privilege. Try to make your way over for a swim every now and then for some relaxation.

5. "Don't stress if you don't find a boyfriend or girlfriend" - Becca Przetycki

It may be cliche, but college is for finding your bridesmaids, not your husband (especially freshman year).

6. "Be careful in the DC. You could end up stuck on the toilet for a while" - Elena Matta

Be very stingy on taqueria day guys.

7. "Don't be afraid to be weird. Eventually, people will join you" - Molly Dreblow

8. "Go to chapel and Vespers on a regular basis" - Nicholas Lee

With all of the schoolwork we get, it is very easy to sacrifice parts of our relationship with God. Use your free time to delve into His Word, and make that time intentional.

9. "Don't plan out your year; chances are, things will change" - Alyssa Knight & Sophie Anderson

Things almost never go according to plan, and college is no different. If you go into your freshman year expecting a roller coaster, you'll be less stressed in general.

10. "Develop a good relationship with your adviser" - Sophie Wilson

It's very common for students to only meet with their adviser to schedule things. My adviser is my favorite faculty member, and I meet with her at least once a month to just chat. A good relationship with your adviser will help you in the future, trust me.

11. "Focus on building relationships with your floormates" - Nicholas Lee

Seriously. You live with these people, get ready in the same bathrooms, and do floor events with them. Intentional relationships will make the strangers you meet during Welcome Week your family.

12. "It might take time for things to get where you want them to be" - Sophie Anderson

You might not find the perfect major, friend group, or even study spot right away. Don't sweat it. Things always work themselves out in the end.

13. "Experience everything you can" - Sophie Wilson

Freshman year will change you, but you have to let it happen. Take a step out of your comfort zone and say yes to things you might not normally say yes to. It will make you grow in so many ways.

So there it is. The best advice from last year's freshman class. We can't wait to welcome you guys onto campus!

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Advice To Live By As Told By Bob's Burgers

The Belchers hold the key to a better life.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
