Whether it’s caused by school, family, relationships, or anything else of the sort, none of us are strangers to being in a bad mood. We’re not strangers to feeling stressed either. It’s natural. We don’t have to just accept these unfortunate emotions however. Here are, from my experience, the best coping mechanisms for a bad mood or a bad case of stress.
1. Distract yourself with another sensation
Taking a hot shower, chewing on ice, or watching a scary movie cause your brain to experience extreme sensations. This will scientifically distract your brain from stresses and sadness. Cool right?
2. Exercise BUT in the way you want
Scientifically, exercise causes your body to release endorphins which naturally increase your mood, which also goes hand in hand with anxiety. That being said, don’t push yourself to exercise in a way you hate. For example, I hate running and it actually negatively affects my mood, so I focus on using other machines.
3. Take a nap
I always say, “when nothing goes right, go to sleep”. Lack of sleep naturally causes irritability and stress. It’s also nice to take a break from thinking.
4. Eat a piece of chocolate (seriously)
Dark chocolate, like exercise, also causes the release of endorphins. Forget your diet for a second, chocolate makes you happy.
5. Download the app “Happify”
Happify is an app that features different games and activities proven to improve moods. The free app also includes helpful coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety.
6. Watch a funny TV show
Laughing helps for obvious reasons. My best recommendation: "How I Met your Mother"
7. Go easy on yourself
Getting mad at yourself for being upset or for being stressed will only make things worse. It’s best to be patient with yourself and have faith that tomorrow will be a better day.
