The movie industry saves their best films for the summer. There will be many summer blockbusters, but are those movies really that good? Suicide Squad, Finding Dory, Captain America Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse, and Star Trek Beyond all did great at the box office, but were they really that good? These movies all had huge budgets, and are either sequels, remakes, or spin offs. Thus, they draw on their large fan base and use their huge media outreach to draw in many movie goers. They are also all kind of the same movies with the exception of Finding Dory, a lot of action, great special effects, etc. However, here are five movies that all did worse at the box office than the previously mentioned movies, that I think are better.
The Legend of Tarzan
This is not the Tarzan you remember from your childhood. This is Disney’s new live action movies, and seemingly were made for adults. The movie starts with Tarzan in London, where he is a bit of a legend. However, he is convinced to go back to the jungle where he is from by Samuel L. Jackson to investigate a shady mining company. Tarzan finds out that the situation there is awful, and that the mining company is trying to enslave the jungle people. He also has conflict with a sworn enemy, and some apes. The movie is also capped with a good ending.
Now You See Me 2
If you haven’t seen the first Now You See Me I advise you to do that right away, it's excellent. The second movie, in my opinion, is a little bit better. The plot is more focused in the first one. The Four Horsemen return to the lime light, and are force into pulling of a heist by a tech genius. The movie does a great job of coming full circle at the end which really makes it in my opinion. Plus, Dave Franco is in this movie again, and who doesn’t like him.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
This was the funniest movie all summer. Adam Devine and Zac Efron are both hilarious by themselves, but when they come together they are even better. The two played up to their stereotypical characters perfectly. At first, the girls are really annoying, but quickly grow on you. The movie is not all comedy, but actually has a pretty solid plot and they have the makers struck the perfect balance between the two. Make sure to watch the credits, as they might actually be the funniest part of the movie. I saw it with my parents and sister, and we all loved it.
Sausage Party
This movie is loaded with funny actors: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, and Edward Norton. The movie is definitely funny, and incredibly vulgar. However, what is unexpected is its social commentary. If you are easily offended, this is not the movie for you, as it rips on modern society from religion, race, politics, you name it.
The Nice Guys
Last, but not least, well, actually the best. Nice Guys is by far the best movie of the summer, and is certainly one of my all-time favorites. It is like nothing you have ever seen before. It takes place in 1970’s LA, and stars Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling. This movie is hard to pigeon hole into a category, as it has parts of everything from comedy, action, suspense, mystery, and drama. It does all of these genres not well, but exceptionally. This is definitely a must watch.
