During the summer, college kids are typically expected to get a job to raise funds for their education, grab an internship to put on a resume, or work at something to get overall experience for a future career. One of the options that students will often take is helping out as a counselor at a summer camp. And as they say, if you get a job you love you won't work a day in your life.
1. The people who work with you have the same mindset.
Your coworkers actually enjoy the same things as you, why else would you all be here? And they also all have the same work ethic to get their job done and help these kids out.
2. The kids are adorable.
I myself am not a huge fan of kids. However, I must've just been around the wrong kind of kids because summer campers are the best kind, and really sweet and cute.
3. You get great stories out of it.
Kid: "You know, Billy Armstrong! The first man on the moon!"
Me: Actually that was Neil Armstrong. Billie Joe Armstrong is the lead singer of Green Day.
Kids: "Green Day? You mean the Green Bay Packers? Boo!"
Me: *walks away*
4. The kids are somehow smarter than you.
It's pretty impressive the amount of knowledge these kids have in regards to current events and how things work. I worked at a STEM summer camp, and those kids knew a lot more than I did at that age..
5. You gain a better hope for the future.
And because those kids were so smart and up to date, it gives you a little bit more hope that the future is doomed by stupidity.
6. The kids are funny.
They may not have the same sort of sense of humor as adults or your peers have, but children have a kind of humor that is all their own, and sometimes even better.
7. You get to embrace your inner kid while helping out.
When the kids need help with a project, it's almost like getting to do the project yourself. When else would you have a legitimate excuse to make slime or straw bridges or robots out of cardboard?
8. You learn a lot yourself.
In regards to the kids knowing a ton about everything, you learn some stuff from them you didn't previously know. Did you know that the Grand Canyon isn't actually the largest canyon on Earth anymore?
9. You feel much more like an adult surrounded by children.
When you're at college, you're surrounded by other pseudo-adults who somehow edge you out at adulting. But when you're surrounded by 8-12 year olds, you feel pretty mature.
10. It's a lot of fun.
Overall working at summer camps is a blast. I don't think it's an experience many people would trade for anything.
