So, college is out for the summer. I am home for three weeks before I go abroad. I have realized that this is the perfect amount of time that my parents adore me without getting sick of me laying on their couch and eating all their food. Don't get me wrong I haven't turned into a complete couch potato since I've been home. I am working, but lets be honest I spend most of my time glued to the couch with the TV remote strategically wedged in my hand.
Saturday Night Live made a video about kids coming home from college for Thanksgiving break called Back Home Ballers. Ever since I saw the video, I knew that it perfectly described my life while I was home. I have to admit I may have pretended to be napping instead of helping around the house, but hey college is hard and I'm tired. Here are the best parts of being a Back Home Baller that I enjoy taking full advantage of. (Sorry mom and dad. Love you!)
FREE FOOD
Maybe its just me, but I spend way too much money on food while I am gone at college. My bank account is constantly drained by Chipotle, Panera, Kroger, and the occasional, necessary Dominos delivery. Not only is the food at home free, but its also much better. Home cooked meals are something almost every college kid misses. I also have a specific list of restaurants that I need to visit while I'm home for any break. Restaurants at school just can't compare to your favorite restaurants at home and thats a fact.
Laundry
Finally, a break from the school washing machines. At home, you have a good washing machine that wont eat all of your socks. It is also private so you don't have to worry about someone stealing your favorite fraternity shirt or leaving your soaking wet clothes in a pile on the top of a machine. In your laundry room at your house you don't have to sit around for 30 minutes with your mesh laundry basket waiting for an open machine. My dad also loves me and occasionally surprises me with a stack of my warm, clean laundry folded outside my room.DVR and a big TV
I fall victim to abusing the family television when I'm home. At school, I rarely have time to kick my feet up and watch TV. But at home, I have the luxury of a big TV and DVR that I quickly fill with all my favorite shows. On weekend morning, my mom and I spend way too long watching our guilty pleasure television show while sipping coffee cuddled up on the couch. I know I could be doing a lot more productive things with my life like reading a book or walking my dog, but I'll stay in front of the TV for now.
Pets
Yes, I am one of those college kids that Facetimes my parents as an excuse to see my dog. I may also force my mom to send me pictures of my dog when I'm missing her. Pets are more than just animals to may of us. They are fury, hairy, or scaly members of our families. There is nothing better than opening the garage door straight from the airport and seeing my dog dash over to greet me with endless kisses.Overall, being a Back Home Baller isn't a bad thing. Just remember to thank your parents and attempt to be helpful every once in a while.
