The Best of Iowa City

Since senior year is coming to an end, I have been reminiscing about all of my favorite things about Iowa City. All the little things about Iowa City that make it so unique. Here's what I've come up with:

1. FAC.
Who doesn't love Friday after class at some of Iowa City's favorite establishments. Sure in the real world there is happy hour at a local sports bar, but it is nothing like FAC in Iowa City.

2. Kev Cab.
After four years I still have no idea what cab company Kev works for or how he gets away with charging us two dollars or how his phone manages to hold hundreds of contacts so he can call us all by name.

3. Food Stands in the Ped Mall.
I'm not sure who's brilliant idea it was to open food stands in the Ped Mall after 10 p.m. on the weekends, but every person who has been served one too many in Iowa City is eternally grateful. Loaded potato bowls and Marco's grilled cheese for days.

4. The Ped Mallin general.
One of the best ways to enjoy Iowa City at night is people-watching in the Ped Mall on your favorite outdoor patio. You can find local shops and amazing food all along the Ped Mall.

5. Summit Tailgate.
Most colleges tailgate during football season, but Iowa has a different approach. We tailgate all year long. Win or lose Iowa students rally behind all of our teams.

6. The Pentacrest.
The Pentacrest is home to students studying in warm weather, political activists and the talented people who decide to walk across a wire tied between two trees. Its one of the best places on campus to people watch and I will surely miss it.

7. Black and Yellow.
I'd like to take a moment to recognize how awesome our school colors are. Nothing is better than raging to "Black and Yellow" by Wiz Khalifa at a tailgate.

8. The Rec.
I feel that the Rec is very under appreciated. From state of the art equipment to the incredible smoothies, and let's not forget the tanning deck that is perfect for those warm weather days.

9. Local Music. Whether you're seeing a band at Blue Moose, enjoying local artists play instruments in the Ped Mall or studying to live music in Java House, Iowa City is full of talented musicians.

10. Iowa Students.
I know every campus has students, but not like Iowa. When I visited Iowa I realized how genuine and amazing each and every student on this campus is. You constantly see people getting involved with the community and striking up conversations with strangers. The students at Iowa are one of a kind. You can find great people in the Midwest, but the best are found at Iowa.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
