To My Best Friend's Roommate

I'll miss her more than she'll know.

So the reality is that my best friend and I do not go to the same college. I go to school in the North and she goes to school in the South. Because of this, her roommate is now her person since I am hundreds of miles away. But remember this: I have been with this girl through high school. I used to spend every day with her, but now it's you. I am putting my best friend's well-being into your hands, so roommate, here's a few things you should know:

The girl you are living with for the next eight months is one of the best people you could have in your life. She is funny, caring, sweet, smart, and has the biggest heart you'll ever find. She will be there for you when you need it, and in return you will be her shoulder to cry on.

She loves dogs, and will talk about her dog more than her own siblings. That dog is her entire life, so don't be surprised if you walk into your room and she is facetiming him.

Her family is her world. She loves them more than anyone or anything else in the world. They have been there with her through thick and thin, and she might get a little homesick at times. She will always be on the phone with them, and tends to refer to them by their first names.

She is beyond indecisive, so you will most likely have to help her make every decision: what to eat, what to wear, what classes to take, and the list goes on and on. But you have to make sure that she doesn't do something she will regret.

Her self-confidence isn't what it should be. Her self-esteem should be as high as the Empire State Building, but unfortunately, she doesn't believe in herself as much as she should. Make sure you keep her confidence up, keep reassuring her, and reminding her how important of a person she is.

She thinks she cannot do school. She is extremely smart, and anyone who knows her, knows that. She, however, thinks that she is not as smart as she actually is. Let her know that she is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to.

She loves to talk about her friends (me included). Her life involves so many amazing people, and she loves sharing them with others. She'll talk to them all the time, and will always be sharing their gossip with you. You will learn the names of the most important people in her life, so you better remember who's who.

I know you will be her person and will be spending hours upon hours with her, which makes me a bit jealous, but I won't let you take my spot in her life. You know how Christina used to be Meredith's person until she moved, and now it's Alex? Well you are now Alex. Take care of her for me, she'll need you more than she lets on.

Sincerely,

The Best Friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
