Our favorite ice-cream creator, Ben & Jerry's, made a public statement on their website about systematic racism and how they believe that it is still very prevalent in today's society.
Their website read:
"Black lives matter.
They matter because they are children, brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers.
They matter because the injustices they face steal from all of us — white people and people of color alike. They steal our very humanity.
Systemic and institutionalized racism are the defining civil rights and social justice issues of our time. We’ve come to understand that to be silent about the violence and threats to the lives and well-being of Black people is to be complicit in that violence and those threats."
Following this statement was a heartfelt request asking us to join them in breaking the silence, and explained why it is important for us not to be complicit. They advise that the first step to fixing this problem, like any other problem, is admitting that there is, in fact, a problem. Ignoring the fact that systematic racism still exists and remaining silent about it is no better than committing the violence yourself.
"It’s been hard to watch the list of unarmed Black Americans killed by law enforcement officers grow longer and longer. We understand that numerous Black Americans and white Americans have profoundly different experiences and outcomes with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. That’s why it’s become clear to us at Ben & Jerry’s that we have a moral obligation to take a stand now for justice and for Black lives," reads their website.
Shortly after publishing this genuine message, their twitter account posted:
"Black Lives Matter. Choosing to be silent in the face of such injustice is not an option."
In response to their post and viral tweet, Americans from all over the country began tweeting back with gratitude and clever names for a #BenAndJerrysNewFlavor.
I didn't need another reason to love Ben & Jerry's, but I now I have one.
