I Believe In Love, Not Valentine's Day

Why is it that one day a year, we blow hundreds of dollars on something we can tell someone any day for free?

I Believe In Love, Not Valentine's Day
Lindsay Caudill

Being someone who has been in a relationship for nearly two years now, I have found myself getting antsy and excited as February 14th draws closer. Pink and red line the shelves of every store and chocolate and stuffed animals suffocate anyone who goes to Walmart for a gallon of milk. I find myself wistfully looking at giant stuffed animals and doing hours of online research for that perfect gift for my S/O. It wasn't until recently that I asked myself- why do we do this?
Why is that that one day a year, we as a nation blow hundreds of thousands of dollars on candy that will be gone in a week or flowers that will die off in a few days?
Don't get me wrong, I love flowers and chocolate, but why is it that one day a year I can get bombarded with them then never see a heart shaped box (#sorrynotsorry, Nirvana reference) again until the following February?
Why is my boyfriend expected to be romantic and chivalrous one specific day a year rather than any day he wants to or has the chance to? have never understood why we put so much pressure to be romantic and show our loved ones how much we care about them on one specific day a year. Wouldn't it make so much more sense to place this same pressure onto showing our loved ones that we appreciate them every single day?
Waiting until one specific day to tell someone how much you love them seems, to me, like 364 days of wasted time. Why do we speak to someone for the majority of 364 days and not tell them how much they mean to us when we never know when our last day on earth may be, only to say it on a day of red and pink and forced "I love you"s?
And, lastly, why do we put more emphasis on Valentine's Day than on the love that the very day is celebrating?
I do not believe in red and pink or conversation hearts. I do not believe in boxes of chocolate or extravagant acts of romance set only on February 14th I believe in the way your heart skips a beat when you see her standing on her porch before your first date. I believe in the electricity you feel in your chest when you kiss him for the first time and the tears you can't hold back when they tell you that they can't live without you. I believe in love wholeheartedy and endearingly with every fiber of my being. I have seen what love can do and how it can heal. I have seen how love can do wonders and perform miracles, while Ihave seen young girls jealous over what they did not get from their boyfriends on Valentine's day rather than hold them a little closer. Valentine's Day is a commerical holiday, meant only for gifts, cards, chocolate and extravent gifts of romance. I do not believe in the Hallmark holiday that is Valentine's Day, but I will always believe in love.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
