Keeping Your Faith In College Is Possible

Not everyone will have the same opinion that you do, not everyone will want to hear what you have to say, but there are still ways for you to stay grounded.

Though this is probably of no surprise, college is where many people lose their faith. Transitioning from high school where you are constantly around the people in which you have grown up with, to college where you are around a whole new group of people from different states, and even countries can make it hard to stand firm in what you believe in.

Especially considering that depending on which state/country someone comes from, the religion that is most commonly practiced varies.

Typically, most people spend birth to high school around the same group of people, or in the same town. Not only does this get them accustomed to the personalities of the people around them, but many also become accustomed to the beliefs of the people around them as well.

Although in high school/your hometown you may have been able to speak about your beliefs without having to worry about others beliefs being different, college is almost the opposite. Being in a new environment can often be intimidating, but there are many ways to keep your faith while in college.

I was not only intimidated when I got to college, but I was confused as to how the people here were so different from me and how they had different beliefs than I did since the people I had grown up around always believed the same thing as me. Often times even your professor may be feeding you information that you think to yourself "Is this correct?

Does he know what he's talking about because he does have a Ph.D.?" It is important in times like this to remember what you believe in and don't disrespect, but also don't give in to what is being said.

Not everyone will have the same opinion that you do, not everyone will want to hear what you have to say, but there are still ways for you to stay grounded. It's easy to slip off track whenever everyone around you is telling you something different, and there isn't someone above you (like a parent or guardian) telling you what is right and wrong.

It is very easy to just think "I guess it really doesn't matter that much," and begin to lose sight in what used to be the norm for you.

That being said, there are many ways to keep your faith in college also. If you plan on joining a sorority or a fraternity, many of them have weekly bible studies or small groups. I know my sorority has bible study every Monday night which is an awesome way to find the special group of friends with the same beliefs as you!

My college and many other colleges have churches on campus also that normally hold services on Sunday mornings! This will also get you into the atmosphere of fellow believers just like yourself.

Once you have found the many different opportunities and organizations that go along with your beliefs, it is so much easier to stand firm in what you believe in, and keep your faith in college!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
