Many people look back to high school with happiness, but not many people would ever want to go back. Well, I do. I want to spend every day of the week in a building full of teenagers who don't appreciate what I do, just to go home and grade papers and write lesson plans. Lesson plans that most of the kids won't listen too.
"You know that most of those kids won't like you, right?" Yes, I know. I remember the things I heard about some of my teachers in the hallways of my high school, but I really can't bring myself to be deterred by that.
I want to be a teacher because I love my subject matter. I want to spend every day sharing my love of the English language with others, even if they don't particularly want to be there. I want to experience high school through the eyes of a teacher. There is so much different from student to teacher viewpoint.
I want to be a teacher because I want to see the look in a student's eyes when they just get it. When they finally understand something that has been keeping them down. When a child is in study-hall and is reading a novel and I see them get to emotional parts and see their reaction.
I want to be a teacher because I want to go back. I miss school. I enjoy being in a classroom, learning and sharing my knowledge. I can't wait to create an environment where every child can feel safe to share their emotions or thoughts or questions.
I want to be a teacher because I want to be able to be a safe place for a student. Life is hard, people are mean, and sometimes you just need a break. I get that. I needed a place like that, and I want to be able to provide one. I know I may not be anyone's favorite teacher, but I may just be the teacher someone needs. And I can't wait.
