7 Things You Learn Working At A Summer Camp
Maggi Medley

I spent the summer working at a summer camp. My entire summer was full of many important things. However, I wanted to highlight the ten most important things that you learn working at a summer camp. Here they are:

1. It's OK to not look perfect. After all, you're outside most of the day in the heat of the summer.

It would be weird if you had perfect hair and make up every day.

2. It's OK to be weird and let your little quirks show because everyone has them, and I have found no one more accepting than the people I met working at summer camp.

3. The people you meet will more than likely stay your friends for a long while after camp is over.

4. Days off are like mini vacations.

5. Being a camp counselor might not sound exciting to some, but to the people that actually do it, there is nothing better.

You get the chance to be a role model for kids of all ages and all walks of life and that is something pretty special.

6. Camp food isn't the best, but you learn to love it. And believe it or not, it actually could be a lot worse.

7. When you work at summer camp, you gain a family.

Someone is always going to be there for you. You never have to worry about being alone.

After my first summer working at a summer camp, I couldn't be any happier. I have gained so many friends, and many of those friends have turned into family. I know that I have impacted many lives, staff and campers alike, needless to say, they have affected my life too. Working at summer camp has made me a better person. I have been shown how loving and kind a community of people can be towards someone who is different. There is something so special about the sense of community with a summer camp and that is why it's so hard to say goodbye. I was blessed to spend my summer working at a summer camp and I wouldn't have traded it for anything else.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
