I was at a concert a few weeks ago, but something dawned on me. When the performer was taking a break from singing, he was talking to some people in the pit. While he was talking to a guy in the crowd, this girl just had her phone out essentially in his face.
The performer said something that really spoke to me. "Put the phone away and be present."
I've been to tons of concerts in my life. I've seen a variety of artists. I've taken tons of pictures and videos. I've had multiple minute Snapchat stories the day after. I was doing this so I could watch the videos and Snapchats later, so I can look back on the pictures. But in the process, I was missing the moments that I was physically getting to be apart of.
During this concert, it finally clicked for me.
We spend so much time taking the perfect picture, recording the best video, posting the funniest Snapchat story, that we're missing out on what we're physically apart of at that very moment. We want everyone else to know what we're doing and who we're with, that we don't always take the opportunity to fully appreciate the moments we're getting to live.
We're getting opportunites and chances that some people would kill to have, and we're taking advantage of them. We're spending time with people with love and care about, and we're taking advantage of it.
Sure, we'll appreciate the pictures and the videos when we're looking back one day. But the memories we'll have far beyond our iPhone and Snapchat memory is going to be so much more valuable in the end.
So, next time you're seeing your favorite artist live, you're out with your best friends, or just doing something special, put the phone away. Be present. Enjoy it.
