My dad was in the military for 21 years, and 15 of those years I was a part of. I experienced the life of a "military brat." There are many negatives of having a parent in the military such as moving around frequently and having to make new friends; however, there are so many positives to it also.
Being a military child means a lot of things. It means that you are constantly moving from city to city and trying to maintain friendships along the way. It's like as soon as you become good friends with one person, then you're soon moved to the next place to repeat the cycle. While this ongoing process of creating new relationships and adapting to new environments is completely and 100 percent exhausting, it's a blessing in disguise.
Kids don't realize the positive aspects of being a military child while they are continuously saying goodbye to what they are familiar to, but it takes growing up to understand the magnitude of blessings that come with it.
Moving around a lot of course gives you a lot of friends, but it also allows you to better adapt to your surroundings and to accept change when it comes your way. The older you get, the more things continue to change around you. Moving from place to place has allowed me to accept change as a positive thing. I now understand that I shouldn't be afraid of change, but I should embrace it.
It has also put into perspective for me how important family is. When moving and always meeting new people, there's some people that never leave, and that is your family. While it can be difficult to learn to get used to new situations and new people, they're a constant sense of "home" for when yours is taken away from you.
When you finally do begin to get used to your new living environment and the people around you, you begin to appreciate everything. You appreciate the diversity you were.
