What It's Like Being An Independent Helpless Romantic

You can be your own person outside of your relationship.

Growing up there is always a stigma seen through role models and celebrities that a relationship is what most people strive for in life. This is not necessarily the case for everyone. Some want to focus on school and their careers, while others want to travel the world. At the end of the day, most people want someone to come home to, whether it be your dog, best friend, or spouse.

What little girl didn't want Prince Charming to come and sweep her off her feet, right? But, as times have changed, so has society as well as our views. For any relationship to work, there must be your own sense of identity. This creates an anchor for your relationship to build off of, otherwise you can get stomped on and lose yourself.

Without yourself how are you able to open up and be your own person? You can grow into yourself with another human being and see how you shape them and they will shape you. You learn new beliefs that you didn't know existed, and you could never go backwards. If you end up not agreeing on something, that's fine too, because you have learned something about them. It opens up your heart so that someone can see who you really are, instead of hiding behind a locked door.

In the end, arguments are meant to make you stronger, and if it can't be handled that's when it should end. There should never come a time when someone is not allowed to express themselves or speak their feelings, relationships are all based on trust and communication.

I too love sappy love movies on any Friday night, but the point is that life is not all fairy tales. We can all predict them and that sadly isn't the case for your average relationship. I always knew as a young girl, that I had to work hard to get where ever I wanted to go, I couldn't stay home and let my husband do everything. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this if its what your heart wants. That is what you should always look for in life, what your heart wants. Even though you can be independent, you have to love others as well. The focus can not always be on you, there is a time and place for everything, but a balance is necessary.

The fairy tales will play themselves out so try not to get ahead of yourself. Until your time comes, just build yourself and become the best you that you can be. Don't depend on someone else's words to support your confidence.

Don't forget to make every relationship count. You have to divide time for everyone in your life. You can't spend enormous amounts of time with a significant other and never with friends and family. All of these will contribute to who you will become someday.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
