How Being Greek Can Help You Later In Life

Greek life is often the target of negative media and more likely than not has a negative connotation. However, these stances are often coming from those who are not affiliated with the Greek system and group all greek organizations into one group: college kids who are just looking to party. While the social aspect is large part of Greek life, it is definitely not the only, or even the most important part of being Greek. Joining a sorority or fraternity in college can lead to so many great things during your college years and even later in life.

You can make new friends

Like I stated, joining a sorority or fraternity is an awesome place to become social. You'll be able to make so many connections with so many different people. People often hang out with the same type of people, but in Greek life you meet so many people that are so different than you are and they become your best friends. Differences are a good thing, and often lead to the best friendships. Not to mention, you'll always have someone that's down to go get taco bell or smoothies at any time of the day. Joining a fraternity or sorority gives you the opportunity to make friends not just for four years, but for life.

You can learn how to be more professional

Being apart of a sorority or fraternity gives you a little taste of how actual business meetings are run in the real world. Wearing business attire for meetings and learning how a meeting is conducted isn't just something Greeks do for fun, it's a way to make sure our chapters are maintaining professionalism and will help us when we move onto our jobs after graduation. Not only does it help with professionalism, you have the ability to become a leader in the chapter. Becoming a position holder in the chapter allows you to enhance your leadership skills. This can transfer into everyday life, as you know how to conduct yourself and be an effective leader. Even if you don't have a position in your chapter, you can still be a leader and that will continue to help you later in life.

You make connections

Being in a sorority or fraternity expands your connections to all over the country. Brothers or sisters that come back and visit are always willing to help with the internship and job searches. It isn't uncommon for sisters or brothers to end up working together later in life or helping one another find jobs in their areas. It also gives people a good place to crash when they're in their town.

It helps balance life

Being Greek definitely teaches you how to balance everything in your life. Having to maintain grades, a personal life, having fun and sorority life can be difficult sometimes. But having a support system and help from your chapter can definitely lead to a more balanced life. Being in a sorority allows you to sort out what is important to you and helps you create an organized life where you're able to get all of your stuff done before having fun. This can help you later in life, when you are trying to balance work, family and a time to relax for yourself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
