On Being "Good Enough"

There is so much love around you already.

Well kids, it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow, the holiday devoted to scrambling to find a date, (even though it’s technically supposed to be about cherishing someone you’re with??? But I don’t make the rules). There’s enough pink, red, hearts, and lace to just about make us projectile vomit at the sight of couple’s eating each other’s face looming all around us.

The coming of Valentine’s Day can sometimes leave us feeling down in the dumps about our lack of relationship status. We wonder if we were just a little more this, or just a little more that: THEN maybe someone would finally ask us out. It causes many of us to stare our insecurities straight in the face, and not be happy with what we look like or who we are. For some, it causes us to wonder, “Why am I not good enough?”

I think we’re each “enough”. Don’t feel like you have to be validated by a relationship in order to love yourself and/or be happy. I believe that the relationship you have with yourself is probably the most important one of your life, and that we should all strive for a little more self-love each and every day. Working towards complete and utter perfection is not only impossible, but it’s sort of a waste of time. I’m not suggesting we all don’t try and better ourselves, I’m saying that no matter what we do, we are all flawed people. That's exactly how I would define being human, as being flawed, but that's okay.

Even though it may seem impossible right now, and you may feel very lonely, you will find someone someday. Your flaws will be endearing and they’ll have some too. But in the end, you are enough and will be enough and have always been “enough”.

If you look around you, you’ll see how much love is actually in your life. Love from yourself. Love for and from you friends. Love for and from your family. Love for and from your pets. Love for your passions. Love for art. Love for music. Love for sports. Love for creativity and expression. The list goes on and on. There is so much love around you, all you have to do is open your eyes and see it.

Besides, chocolate and candy will be on sale tomorrow. :)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
