So your teen years are over and you are starting your third decade of life.
You have probably already gone on your first date, had your first kiss, obtained your license, (maybe received a ticket of some sort), worked your first job, graduated from high school, and mastered your first year away from home.
But now you're 20. Here are some realizations that hit you as you head into the next phase of your life:
You're no longer a teenager. You are now 20. Duh.
There is now a "2" in front of your age instead of a "1" and you might even say I'm "20-teen" when asked how old you are on your birthday.... (I totally did that...)
You are in your 20's. Let that sink in.
Hey guys!!! I'm 20!!! Wait.....I'm in my 20's. This decade I will graduate college and have a career get married and buy a house have kids and....OH MY GOD.
You can no longer blame your mood swings and outbursts on your adolescent youth.
You can only blame your mood swings on real-world stresses, which forces you to admit that you may not be all that together.
You aren't a kid anymore.
Gone are the days you can throw an insane hissy-fit on your mother's kitchen floor after spilling milk. (Although there are definitely going to be days you want to do just that.)
You aren't even a teenager anymore.
Since when did The Facebook become uncool????
You have to be an adult.
What does "being an adult" actually constitute? Taxes? Rent? Making your own doctors appointments?
You beat teenage pregnancy but are still not old enough to drink. (Can someone say filler year???)
Well I guess I'll just wait here then....
You might not actually have all the time in the world.
When you are a teenager, your options are limitless. Once you begin your 20's, you actually have to start narrowing down your paths and decide how you want to spend the rest of your life. You still have some time, but the end result seems much closer than it did at 15.
Internships become a real thing and so do careers.
Yes, you will have to deal with horrible bosses and bratty co-workers. Sometimes it will seem like your only job is to get the coffee and reload the printer paper, but hey, everyone starts somewhere, right?
You realize that the adults around you are still learning about adult-ing themselves.
Attention: If you are a full grown adult who has all the secrets to the universe and has life completely together, please comment on this article so that I may contact you and learn your ways. Thank you.
You are no longer the baby at school.
The freshman seem to be everywhere and you wonder if you were ever as annoying as them. You were. You were probably worse. No question about it.
You realize that your metabolism is rapidly changing ...
Suddenly you realize that, no, you can NOT, in fact, eat an entire pizza three times a week and drink soda with every meal because your jeans will inevitably become tighter and you will feel disgusting.
... And that you will make even more mistakes than you did as a teenager.
You actually have to learn to survive in the real world. Surviving high school was just a test run.
The phrase,"Where do you see yourself in 10 years" actually becomes terrifying.
In ten years, I will be 30. I will have graduated college, had a career, (hopefully) gotten married, moved into a real house and had kids. Wait....I have to do all that in how many years???
But hey, you're in your 20s!
Enjoy it!
